Drive From Newport, RI to New Haven , CT

Alright I am going to try and give as much info as possible to get some really good suggestions! :)

August 11th:

We will be touring Newport, RI in the morning/early afternoon. We will be doing the mansions etc. {ANYTHING THAT IS A MUST TO SEE HERE WOULD BE APPRECIATED}.

From there we know we would like to go to Mystic, CT and of course get some pizza at Mystic Pizza and tour around there as well.

After that we are going to head towards New Haven, CT. We thought about staying in New Haven for the night but am not sure... we plan on touring Yale on the 12th in the morning {ANYTHING ELSETHAT IS A MUST TO SEE HERE WOULD BE APPRECIATED}. and then heading north from there.

Sooo... please help me with suggestions for an inexpensive (under $100 would be great), clean, prefer not a chain- place to stay between Mystic, CT and New Haven, CT.

For New Port, RI one day not enough.

I would suggest to go to ';The Breakers'; mansion. and take a ride down Ocean Avenue next to Brenton Point State Park its so nice the view.

Enjoy

Just stayed in Mystic last week. Steamboat Inn on the Mystic River $$$$ but pretty good Inn, right in main town a block from Mystic Pizza (took a picture). Inn is on the wharf first floor room was 6 ft from water. If u have 4+ people3 ask for the Kathleen Room .. it is two rooms with a huge bath , King and sofa bed. For $17.50 u can visit the Seapor Museum about 1 mile away.Enjoy

Newport suggestion - Order the Clam Chowder from the Black Pearl Resturaunt.

Mystic Suggestion - Mystic Pizza is way overated. The aquarium or seaport are better. Or better yet. Skip Mystic and Go to either of the casinos (Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods).

New Haven Suggestions - Eat your pizza here at Pepe%26#39;s or Sally%26#39;s on Wooster Street or at Modern on State Street. Eat at Louis Lunch for the birthplace of the hamburger.

As far as a hotel recomendation. I would recommend one of the Bed and Breakfast places in either Westbrook, Clinton or Madison.

Do not waste your time at Mystic Pizza!!! If you head to New Haven you are soooooo much better off in having the best pizza ever at either Pepe%26#39;s or Sallys on Wooster Street.

Don%26#39;t get too your expectations of Yale up too high. It is not really a park-like campus, but looks like they plucked a portion of Oxford from England with it%26#39;s gothic architecture and plopped it into the middle of downtown New Haven.

Under $100/night for a ';non chain place'; isn%26#39;t realistic along the Connecticut shoreline in the summer. Plus you%26#39;re going to have a lot of trouble finding anywhere that will take a single Saturday night in August. This is prime tourist time here so expect to pay for it.

I agree about expecting too much out of a Yale tour... I can advise when driving down I-95, get off exit 56, Leetes Island road, there are a hand full of places to stay, go down rt 1 and stay at the Branford motel, with a jacuzzi or other places can be of your choice...

.....then get back over to Leetes Island road and take that all the way down to the shore to Stoney Creek, Branford. Take the 1 hour Thimble Island boat tour...

ALSO....

For Dining off exit 56, you%26#39;ll immediately find Popeyes, Dunkin Donuts, and a Friendly Ice Cream shop...all wrapped around the Stop and Shop parkade (and the T/A truck stop)....

...within 1 mile of this area are three great restaurants on Rt 1, The USS Chowder Pot (seafood, steaks) Humphreys of Branford (wings and ribs), or go south a bit and find SuCasa (mexican)...

hi, you should definitely go just a bit up route 138 when you are in newport to go to greenvale vineyards in portsmouth. it%26#39;s a whole different vision of rhode island. it%26#39;s a great place to take a picnic too.

when you are in new haven, be sure to check out the yale art museum and the yale center for british art, both of which are fabulous louis kahn buildings (go inside! that%26#39;s where much of the magic is!)

p.s. don%26#39;t go to newport winery--it%26#39;s basically in a strip mall off route 138.
