What parts of New Haven are nice?

I%26#39;m considering a travel assignment to the Hospital at Yale (coming from AK), but am concerned about crime, etc. Is that general area around the university a nice area? Thanks for any input!!!

The area east and southeast of the university is nice, but the areas north and west (where the hospital is) are rather seedy. I feel pretty safe going out of the hospital at night--as long as I head straight east towards central campus.

The university does have significant security, emergency call boxes, shuttles, escorts, etc that you can use.

Oh, GREEEAT!!! I%26#39;ll be put into an apartment (I%26#39;m a travel nurse) within 20 minutes of the hospital. How seedy is seedy??? Are there cars burning? LOL! Just kidding. Alot of shootings? (heck, we have them here in Alaska around the malls...doesn%26#39;t matter if it%26#39;s the good side or the bad side!!! Thanks for your input.

Hi funny. I%26#39;m vacationing in Alaska and have heard that crime is serious here and was very leery of going out in Anchorage. New Haven is a wonderful city with so much to do. Don%26#39;t let your fears ruin your experience. Advice about the hospitial area is sound. Go downtown, maybe call a cab if the weather is icky otherwise enjoy the walk, and enjoy the 125 restaruants. The coffee is better in New Haven than in alaska and the people we are finding equally friendly. Have fun. Nancy, now in Seward

I find having grown up in Connecticut that New Haven seemed more vibrant than Hartford (I think it is having Yale), even though Hartford is the state capital (there are things to do in Hartford, but the city can be dead on week days).

Anyway, another added bonus to New Haven is that Metro North (the train to Grand Central in New York City) leaves hourly (more at rush hour) from New Haven. New Haven also has great pizza

An apartment 20 min from the hospital could be in a very nice, safe neighborhood or in a rather poor one. Odds are the apartment that has been arranged for you is in a nicer neighborhood!
