We have never been to Mystic, but were thinking about a trip the week of October 14th. We will be coming from Baltimore- is it better to drive and have our own car or fly and use cabs or walk. I guess my question is ,.is this the type of town where you can walk most places and use a cab for occasional longer distances? Recommendations for lodging. I would like something with a suite or preferrably a condo so we can have a kitchen. What are the must see attractions. We are like casual vacations, love the beach, enjoy wine, no fancy restaurants. Any help would be appreciated.

My wife and I, like to get down to Mystic every once in a while for a one or two night get-a-way. We enjoy staying at The Inn at Mystic, which is located a short walk from the downtown area. I%26#39;m not sure if they have efficiencies, but the rooms are comfortable and good size. I would definitly bring your own car, though the downtown area is walkable from hotels and inns in that area, your bigger hotels and suite hotels are located about a mile or so from downtown. The seaport and the aquarium are located roughly a half mile and mile respectively from the downtown in an area, part of the way which is not good for walking. There are also many other attractions located within a 20-30 mile radius within southeast Connecticut and western Rhode Island that are worth looking into. I also believe that part of the Connecticut wine trail, has some locations in that part of the state.

I agree, having your own car is a good idea. I have eaten at flood tide, restaurant at the inn at mystic several times and love the food and the setting. the grounds are beautiful. if you get a chance you could go to newport for a day and tour the old mansions.
Definitely drive so you can have your car. Some recommendations besides Mystic are the Connecticut wine trail, Newport for the day - visit a mansion and make sure to do the Cliff Walk (a beautiful walk along the water behind the mansions), do a trip to Essex (a beautiful small town with lovely historic homes, a cute street for shopping and some good restaurants - The Griswold Inn is lovely to stop in). In Rhode Island, a lovely beach is at Watch Hill (they have several beaches - the one I would recommend is Napatree Point - you can get a long walk in on that beach). It is a beautiful little town. If you wanted to do something different you could drive to Hartford and do a day trip there. See the Old State House, the Mark Twain House, and the museum the Wadsworth Atheneum. The museum has a nice restaurant for lunch. Since it is leaf peeping time, you might want to consider a ride up north. You could head up to Woodstock and do the scenic drive (its on the map). That weekend there should also be a lot of fun things to do - check the calendar for fairs and special events.
Nice follow ups by everyone onboard here. It may be easy for you to take a flight to Bradley in Hartford then drive down. If you stay in downtown Mystic it is quite easy to walk everywhere... Great little town with nice views and once central hall block is rebuilt the town will be whole again. Day trips to New London and Essex are definitely should dos!
My grandmother lived in Old Mystic and I spent quite a few days there as a youngster, Mystic then (about 30 years ago) was a coastal blue collar town and today it%26#39;s become a haven for artists and musicians. I agree with everyone else, bring your car. Also, try http://www.mysticcountry.com/ this website has just about anything you might find interesting. As a local, if your looking for picturesque sites to get a flavor for the southeastern Connecticut coastline take a side trip to Noank (real small fishing village) and Stonington, the UCONN campus at Avery point in Groton where you can go on the Project Oceanology boat into nearby Long Island Sound. I hope this helps.
Great place to eat is Pauls Pasta. They are located in Groton which is the next town over. Not fancy but great great food!!! They have home made pasta and sauces. The desserts are awesome and the prices are very resonable!! It has great views of the Thames River and if the weather is nice they have seats on the deck. Would be about 10-15 minutes from Mystic and so worth the drive over for dinner. Can be busy on weekend nights between 6 and 8 but if you go a little sooner or during the week day you should be fine!
