Where to go in January?

Hi all - hope someone can help me here! We will be visiting the US in January next year and have five nights to fill in between LA and New York. We were hoping to find somewhere quiet (maybe a vacation rental in or near a village) to spend that time as the rest of our vacation is usually pretty hectic. I have always wanted to visit New England, but am aware the time of year may not be the best to visit out of the way places.

If anyone can help with where to go/how the weather is likely to be/whether anywhere will be open! it would be greatly appreciated.

We have two kids 10 %26amp; 16 - but like I said we are not looking for too much excitement - just somewhere pretty where we chill out. I am posting this on the Connecticut forum but am open to most places within reasonable distance from New York City.

Thanks heaps guys - always get great advice from TA:)

Where to go in January?

thanks tuuli - was actually thinking the same thing - New York state is another option so I will do that.

Cheers:)

What types of activities are you looking for? The area around Mystic / Ledyard is always good - There is the Aquarium, a Native American Museum, 2 casinos (with arcades / stuff for kids), close enough to Newport, RI to do the mansions for a day -

That time of year it is hard to predict the weather - I went away last New Years, and returned to 70 degree weather - The year before, it was below zero!

The weather historically is at or near freezing, but you can never tell. Visit www.weatherunderground.com to get historical data. As your trip nears, you can plug in your travel dates for a forecast. The town in CT closest to NYC have (sorry folks) lost a lot of their ';village feel'; I agree the Mystic area has some nice exploring, I am not sure if will be travelling near Christmas when you may see some lovely decorations. If you don%26#39;t mind going a bit further north, Woodstock Vermont is popular in the winter, with hiking, snowshoing, skiing etc. See www.woodstockinn.com.
