Fairfield County Seafood Recommendation?

Please help me! I have tried several sea food restaurants in fairfield county and none have been very good, including Black Rock Oyster Bar in Fairfield and Ocean Drive in Norwalk.

Being from RI, I am dying for a place where you can just go and get good solid seafood and not pay a million dollars for it.

We would prefer lower fairfield county somewhere from norwalk north but at this point are willing to take any suggestions.

Also looking for restaurants with raw bars included.

Thanks!

Fairfield County Seafood Recommendation?

Conte%26#39;s in Westport is very good. Fresh fish, raw bar, etc.

The Crab Shell in Stamford also has good seafood and is right on the water on Southfield Ave.

You could also try Harbor Lights in Norwalk. Not inexpensive, but fairly decent and they have a raw bar.

Frankly, we usually make the drive up beyond New Haven if we need a good fish-fix. Lenny%26#39;s in Branford, Lenny and Joe%26#39;s in Madison and Westbrook, or Flanders Fish Market in East Lyme would be good choices.

Hi:

Thanks for the recommendations, I%26#39;ll have to try some of these places. Isnt it funny that it seems there are so few to choose from around here when there is a beautiful coast line as a perfect setting?

I appreciate the responses. If I find any others on my own, I%26#39;ll be sure to report back.

Hi, I also love seafood and find it funny that there are not many places around ! Some of the best food is close to you in Stratford at the Shell Station, located at the train station. Have you tried the Oyster River Tavern? It is by the water, just over the Milford line in West Haven. I have only recently discovered it.

Does anyone know of a turkish or hungarian market in Norwalk? I have been told there is one but the person couldn%26#39;t recall the name. They said that it had wonderful produce at an unbelievable rate. Thanks!

  • Walk from Mystic Hilton to Seaport

Is it possible to walk from the Hilton to the Seaport? I will be pushing a stroller. It does not seem that far distance wise but I don%26#39;t know if the roads have sidewalks.

Walk from Mystic Hilton to Seaport

The hotel is literally across the street from the aquarium. 150 yards door to door at most. It would take you almost as long (longer maybe) to pack up the kid(s), drive across the street, park and walk from your car to the aquarium entrance.

So unless the weather is bad or you plan to buy lots of gifts, walking is certainly an option.

Walk from Mystic Hilton to Seaport

Thanks. Is the Seaport that close as well?

Sorry, I had aquarium on my mind when I responded. No, the seaport is probably too far to reasonably walk. You should plan on taking the car.

    Thanks

    Day Trip from Boston

I%26#39;m spending a few days in Boston later in the year and would like to spend a day taking a trip to visit the Mark Twain house and museum. Also, I%26#39;d like to take a trip to Gillette castle as well. Relying on the Greyhound from Boston to Hartford, how easy would it be to get from there to Gillette Castle and is it remotely feasible to do all this in one day.

    Day Trip from Boston

Not too easy. You would need a car, it%26#39;s about 35 - 45 minutes. It%26#39;s right on the river

    Day Trip from Boston

You will NOT have time to both in one day and enjoy them. It will take you like an hour for a tour in the Mark Twain House and to see Gillette Castle (from Hartford) it is like a 45 minutes drive, getting in line for the tickets (you are not guaranteed entrance) due to the fact that they only do small tours and then seen the castle itself. I would STRONLY suggest checking out The Mark Twain house. It is only minutes away from the train station by cab, bus or even a walking distance. It is such a beautiful house, with a well talented tour guide and a nice tourist shop. Next door to his place, you can find Harriett Beecher Stowe%26#39;s home. You can go to www.MarkTwainHouse.org and get more info. Welcome to CT! :)

Here is more info on The Mark Twain House. Hope this helps!

GILLETTE CASTLE STATE PARK (67 River Road, East Haddam, Conn.; 860-526-2336; online at dep.state.ct.us/stateparks/parks/gillettecastle.htm) is open all year free. Tours of the castle are given from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Memorial Day to Columbus Day and cost $5, and $3 for ages 6 to 17. To get there from Interstate 91, take Exit 22 and Routes 9S and 82E; from Interstate 95, take Exit 69, Routes 9N and 148, and the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry ($3 a car), which operates in spring, summer and fall.

Traveling to Hartford from NJ on a Friday in June

What is the best route and how is the traffic coming from NJ to Hartford on a Friday? I was told you could sit on the George Washington Bridge forever. The directions I was given are 95 North to Exit #48 for I-91 North. Is this the best way?

Traveling to Hartford from NJ on a Friday in June

It depends on what time of day you are driving - Later in the day (from about 3 pm - 7 pm), the traffic is horrendous - You can also go up the Merritt Parkway (Hutchinson) to 91N - it is a guessing game, because either way can be bad depending on time of day / accidents / construction

Traveling to Hartford from NJ on a Friday in June

Listen to 880 and 1010 AM as you approach New York for traffic reports every 10 minutes. Listen to see what areas are worst. If the GW Bridge is backed up on one level, take the other. If it is backed up on both levels, you can head for another bridge or tunnel. I-95 east out of New York is referred to as %26#39;Cross-Bronx%26#39; on thereports and is usually slow. In most cases, the Merritt Parkway will be a better option than I-95, but listen to those traffic reports!

Thank you very much. I have been going online to find trafic reports but with no luck so I will write down those alternate ways and the radio stations. Thanks Again!

If you%26#39;re leaving from south or west of 287, take that road into New York and merge onto 684 north after crossing the Tappan Zee Bridge. Follow 684 to its end at I-84, then turn east and that%26#39;ll take you right into Hartford.

I visit almost every weekend from New Jersey to New England and I am heading Hartford CT this weekend again ... yes, today is Friday ... I normally take Garden State Parkway to 287 East thru Tappen Zee Bridge, then I-95.

I normally chicken out as soon as I saw traffic to have a dinner before continuing. Depending when I leave home, I could have a nice dinner at Rt 46, or at Chuck E Cheese as soon as get on 287, take the first exit. Or, have dinner at Paradise Park Place food court.

If I hit the traffice approaching white plains, there is nice PF Chang%26#39;s at the Westchester Mall where there is also nice food court. Sometimes, I hit traffic at Stamford CT area, then I went to Towncenter Mall, another one is great is Millford x39B where there is a Borders and Postal Mall and Westfield Mall.

After that, I seldom hit traffice, but if I never hit traffice and pass all above places, I would go to Mohegan Sun Casino for nice buffet, will not close by 11pm on weekend nights.

Don%26#39;t EVER think of GW Bridge, forget about the radio, by the time you know there is a traffic, you got stuck and can NOT get out. Well, even so, my trick is to ';sleep'; in the car while waiting, you can easily wait for an hour, bumper to bumper ...

The charter bus for school event to Boston take Fwy 287 all the way to pass Tapen Zee Bridge then Fwy 684-N then I-84-East, as one suggested, but that%26#39;s good if you heading Boston, NOTHING quite interesting on the road. Most interesting things is on I-95. Even so, if you take that route, you can visit Danbury Mall and military museum or have a nice Old Country Buffet at Waterbury before visit the Barnes %26amp; Noble next door, the clock museum.

Another problem with that route is that it is mountain route on I-84, and you can%26#39;t just set cruise and relax, and it is 20 more miles as I measure once.

If you really want to see the nice view on GW Bridge and avoid traffic, I found if I leave home after 6pm, I would normally be fine, and that%26#39;s when I heading Boston. I would just drive thru NJ Turnpike and GW Bridge and I-95 and arrive Mohegan Sun at 9:30pm for later buffe dinner, around 11pm, take i-395-N to I-90-E to arrive Framingham Residence Inn or Summerfields Suites at 1am so that I would have a complimentary breakfast the next day before heading destination ...

It is very tire each time back from Boston to take I-84 to I-684 ... Better drive I-95 all the way thru GW Bridge. I have found if I leave CT after dinner, I would be fine. So, when I came back from Boston, I made sure I stop somewhere, say, Mohegan Sun, to have a dinner before heading back NJ ... If I tried to rush, I would end up got stuck somewhere along the route ...

  • Meadows Music Centre

Can anyone recommend a nice but inexpensive hotel near the Meadows Music Center???

    Meadows Music Centre

We have stayed several times at the Crowne Plaza Hotel to attand concerts at the Meadows. It is about 6 blocks from the ';theatre'; and several concert goers who also park there. It is probably not the cheapest, that would be the Super 8 in the other direction on the same street, but I wouldn%26#39;t stay there.......

    Meadows Music Centre

The Hartford Hilton has just undergone a 30 million dollar renovation is now a four star hotel. The hotel has 392 rooms and is attached to the Civic Center which is being transformed into a 36 story residential apartment tower. The hotel is in the central business district, close to I-84 and I-91 and about 5 minutes to Meadows.

In reference to the last post - How bad is the Super 8? There reviews said very friendly and clean just bad location. We will be staying just one night after a concert, but I am a little anal when it comes to bugs and cleanliness.

I think I would pass on the Super 8 in Hartford. As suggested, the Hilton or the Crowne Plaza are good choices if you want to stay right in Hartford. If they are too pricey, then you may want to look at staying in East Hartford. There is a Holiday Inn there - I84 Exit 58. Manchester is just a little bit further - but a nice town to stay in. Lots of restaurants and shops and very safe. You could look into Clarion Suites Inn, Econo Lodge, Fairfield Inn %26amp; Suites or the Courtyard by Marriott.

SweetPea - I took your advice and canceled at Super 8 and went with Crown Plaza. I am getting two different directions one says get off at 29A and the other 32B, which is better. How realistic is the walk to the Meadows. Thanks!

Went to Tom Petty and stayed at the Crowne Plaza - it was great, very clean large quiet rooms the price was a little more than I wanted to spend but well worth it. It is within walking distance from the Meadows, but it is a good hike. Most of the parking is that way anyway so you would be walking that far. The city is dead at night, we got back from the concert at midnight, room service was closed there was no one on the streets and the only thing we could find within walking distance to eat was pizza and beer. We couldn%26#39;t believe how empty the streets were. Overall great concert and going back to a great hotel made it worth the six hour drive.

When we go to summer concerts there, we stay at the Motel 6, which was called Red Roof Inn, now Motel 6. If you are only going to lay your head to sleep and not spend much time in the room, I found this place to be just fine! I am typically picky when it comes to hotels, but this place was clean and served its purpose. The best part is the rate is only about $50 per night!! It is the closest hotel to the venue, literally a block away. I wouldn%26#39;t suggest the Super, as it seems to be more of a truck stop type of hotel. The Motel 6 fills up with concert go%26#39;ers. Can%26#39;t wait to go back up there...July 16th for 3 Doors Down and August 20th for Motely Crue!!!!

The music center is now called New England Dodge Music Center (formerly Meadows Music) at 61 Savitt Way Hartford, CT 06120 If you bid on priceline $50 you can get Crown Plaza.
