My husband and I are heading to Hartford for a business trip in August and plan to extend it three days for a getaway once business is done. What are the highlights of the area? We are open to taking a cheap flight or train to somewhere within 3 hours travel, then settle there for 2 nights and fly back to California. We would like to stay for around $150/night in a decent 3-4 star place and just see some sights. We were thinking Chicago, never been there. Also New York City is an option. We have family in North Carolina on the Outer Banks but that seems far and there%26#39;s not much time. Any suggestions are welcome!
3 days/2 nights in New England in August
From Hartford I would either rent a car and head for Boston or take AMTRAK train to New York. You might get your price range in a boston suburb but not downtown or in New York.

Are you looking for historic sites, country sites, beach, city,.....? Lots to do within 3 hours of Hartford without hopping a plane - Head to the Mystic area for sea / aquarium / casinos, easy ride to Newport RI and the mansions - Or head to the Berkshires and do the mountains -
NYC hands down.
u can see all of boston in a day.
Go to THE CITY.
I would go for Boston without a doubt. There is so much to do and see you could be there for a week. If you would like to see more of the beautiful country side, you could always head to the Berkshires in Mass, or southern NH right across the border. You may be able to find a deal on a short flight to Philadelphia.
Dagin: I just read an article in today%26#39;s New York Times on line (nytimes.com) about what might be an ideal way for you to spend time while you%26#39;re here. The article is entitled ';134 miles of Yankee Charm'; and actually details a route you can drive and suggests places to eat in CT and Rhode Island. Since I%26#39;ve live in CT for all my life, I%26#39;d agree with all that the article would lead you to believe. I%26#39;ve driven to all of those places and it%26#39;s all very beautiful and very ';Connecticut.'; If you decide to look for the article, go to the home page, scroll down to a section headed ';Inside NYTimes'; and you%26#39;ll see a section captioned ';Escapes.'; I just think it would be such a shame for you to travel to CT from CA and immediately leave. This is an amazing state - mountains, lakes, fabulous scenery, antiquity and charm, and a coastline. Please visit CT and enjoy your stay.
I live in a town next to Hartford and there really isn%26#39;t much to do in this area. I would definitely head to NYC for a day. You can catch a train in the morning from the train station right in Hartford. It is about a 2 1/2 train ride. You can see a lot of stuff in 1 day and catch a later train back. Or find accomodation and come back the next day. Boston is my favorite, it is very different than NYC. If you are a sports fan, try to catch a Red Sox game if you can, even if you are not a fan of them. The atmosphere is great. You can drive to Boston in 2 hours for a day trip, or drive somewhere outside the city, park your car and take a train in (recommended, parking is expensive).
If you are into gambleing then DEFINITELY go to Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods near the shore. They are in the middle of no where but are amazing. THey have arenas, malls, resturaunts, bars arcades, concerts, sport games, hotels..oh and casino%26#39;s. I am not even 21 yet but we go all the time to shop and walk around because they are very amazing. They are more high class, not like the casino%26#39;s in Las Vegas. (www.mohegansun.com/)
There is also the basketball hall of fame about a 30 minute drive right on the boarder of CT and Mass
Hope this helps!

Just back from a week in CT and wish I could have read ';134 Miles of Yankee Charm'; before our departure. Even without that resource, we enjoyed driving along the coast (Guilford to Narragansett RI).
