We are thinking of staying in Mystic in the summer for a week of relaxing/beach. Is there enough to do? If not, where would you suggest within a few hours drive of JFK?
Is there enough to do for a week?
Well, there are two world class casinos near Mystic: Foxwoods and Mohegan. I don%26#39;t know...being local, I would say that I would be bored staying there for a week, but if you are just going to the beach and relaxing, maybe you won%26#39;t be.
There are a lot of cute coastal towns nearby, like Old Saybrook. So, if you keep your activities low-keyed, perhaps there is enough to do. I would suggest Newport, Rhode Island as a fine coastal town with plenty to do in the summer. It is a tourist destination, so it will be expensive and crowded, but there is great seafood, the Newport Mansions, the tennis hall of fame, many chartered boat rides and cute shops. Mystic will be less crowded though. Just my personal preferences though!

I agree with the previous poster. Pick Newport over Mystic; there is plenty to do in Newport, but, if you get bored, you could do a day trip to Mystic to go to the Aquarium or the Seaport, but from Newport you%26#39;re also a day%26#39;s trip to Boston (less than 90 minutes). Newport has sailing, beaches, mansions, shopping, great restaurants, nightlife if you want it, but quiet areas if you don%26#39;t. There are many charming Bed and Breakfasts in Newport, also a few larger hotels, or vaction rentals.
Thanks for your advice - I think we will try Newport!
Newport is great... can be busy so even a day in Mystic and Stonington Borough is worth a stop!

I don%26#39;t necessarily agree with the above - Newport%26#39;s great but I%26#39;ve done a week at a cottage in Mystic and loved it!
There are quiet beaches around Stonington %26amp; Mystic, the R.I. beaches for bigger ones %26amp; surfing, one day at one casino, the next at another - even if it%26#39;s just for the shopping %26amp; food! The aquarium takes a day, maybe Seaport %26amp; downtown, boat rides, small, quaint towns, hiking or walking at Bluff Point, lunch on the water in Noank, or Stonington, lots of clam shacks to visit for seafood or great ice cream! Get a clamming license %26amp; make your own feast from scratch.
Can%26#39;t wait for the summer now!
Mystic alone will occupy you if you like a relaxed pace. Otherwise Newport as mentioned is 45mins away, Providence is wonderful and also 45mins away, you can catch the Roger Williams Zoo in RI particularly if you have kids in your party.
I%26#39;d feel very bored in Mystic for a whole week. We just got back and it was lovely for two days. More than that? I don%26#39;t know.
You would be board after 2 days in Mystic. No beaches, just tourist traps.
Boy -- you guys don%26#39;t know much about Mystic, do you? A week is never long enough for us!
Beaches - of course, we stay in a community with 2 beaches right on Fisher%26#39;s Island Sound, but we%26#39;ll also take a quick trip %26amp; enjoy Bushy Point, Watch Hill, Sandy Point, or Misquamicut.
Bushy Point also has trails for walking or biking - it%26#39;s a nice 4-mile trip on a bike from Mystic.
Kayaking - to Stonington, in the coves along the coast, around Deer Is., Mason%26#39;s Island, up the Mystic River (stop at the launch, have lunch or ice cream in town), down the river, stop at Ram Island for a swim, sit and watch the boats. OR launch at Barn Island (also great walking, hiking) and paddle along the nature preserve, to Watch Hill, stop at the beach %26amp; swim in ocean or stop at Sandy Pt for a picnic, swim, lazy afternoon in the sun.
Shopping at Mystic Village or walking around town; spend a day at each Casino - we don%26#39;t gamble but take the teens %26amp; go in all the shops and have dinner at buffet or restaurant. Wed. nights at Mohegun Sun used to have car shows %26amp; fireworks.
Spend a day at the Aquarium and one at the Seaport.
Ride bikes down to Noank - eat out at Abbott%26#39;s or Costello%26#39;s and watch the river traffic; or ride down, listen to a concert band in front of the general store, have dinner at the Seahorse or go to Esker Beach, spend the day, stay for the free concerts on Thurs.
Take a boat ride - afternoon, full day, evening or even multi-day. There are plenty of them around.
Spend a day going through the Submarine Museum in Groton; spend at day at Ocean Beach Park - they have rides %26amp; nature walks besides the beach %26amp; restaurant.
Spend a day going to the wineries. There are also lots of different, tasty restaurants to go to.
And I haven%26#39;t even mentioned the Pequotsepos Nature Preserve - things there to see %26amp; do and walking trails also.
We enjoy it immensely and still don%26#39;t have enough time to do everything!
