Will be in Hartford on business and staying the weekend. Any comments on reasons to stay the weekend -- or good suggestions for places near by to visit and possibly spend the night?
Things to do in Hartford, CTIn Hartford you should visit the Mark Twain House, the Wadsworth Atheneum (art), and the Old State House. Ride down Franklin Ave, Hartford%26#39;s traditional Italian neighborhood and try a restaurant or pick up goodies at Mozzicato%26#39;s Bakery or D %26amp; D Market. Visit West Hartford Center and some of its upscale shops and eat at Grants or Bricco%26#39;s.
I suggest visiting the Mashantucket Pequot Museum near Foxwoods Casino, about an hour from Hartford. Even if you%26#39;re not a gambler Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun are worth a walk through for the shops and restaurants. Connecticut shore and Litchfield Hills are traditional destinations. This time of year there are garden tours and strawberry festivals. http://www.ctvisit.com/
Things to do in Hartford, CTWow. Thank you for the reply. I really do not know much about Hartford and am trying to find out. The Mark Twain House - and the strawberry festival sounds fun. What do you think about Mystic - is is worth the drive? I am thinking about driving to Plymouth. My sister was there last year and really enjoyed the history and the photographic opportunities.
Newport RI, IMHO, would be a better day than Plymouth. Newport has gigantic mansions and a nice downtown, seacoast, shop area with great places to eat. A lot of people talk about Mystic, I don%26#39;t really see the draw. I think there are better coastal towns. In the Hartford area I%26#39;d go with the previous opinion of West Hartford center (Blue Back Square) as a nice place to hang out and stroll. Six Flags New England is only about 45 minutes away from Hartford. The basketball Hall of Fame is an easy about 40-45 minutes away on all highway roads in Springfield MA. The casinos are a great option as well. Mohegan Sun is very nice and Foxwoods just added the MGM which has all new options. Downtown Hartford also has nice places to visit like Black Eyed Sallys for BBQ and blues music, Hot Tomatoes for Italian (great garlic bread), Agave for good mexican and table side guacamole. Lots of options.
Many times when we live in a place we can%26#39;t see the forest for the trees. We just went to the museum to see the exhibit on Impressionism and it was fabulous. Not everyone is merely interested in bars. Hartford offers a lot of things to do for a small city.
Plymouth compared to Newport is not really fair, they are totally different, one being very histroy oriented the other a tribute to opulence. Both are great in their own way.
I appreciate honest suggestions about places to go, but irrelevant negative comments are not of any use to me. My post obviously indicated I am interested in cultural and historical venues and not the party scene. Thanks ';newendlandweaver'; for the positive comments about Hartford!
