I would like to bring my 2 1/2 yr old and 12 yr old for the weekend for the music fest at the seaport. Is it worth traveling from NJ for?
Any suggestions on where to stay that has a pool?
How far is gillette castle, and is it worth going to with kids?
Thanks!
Going to visit Jun 13-15th Music Fest
Hi! We%26#39;ve done this off and on over the years, both before kids and with them. Ours are now 5 and 9, although we haven%26#39;t been able to make it the last couple of years. It%26#39;s a great weekend, especially if the weather is glorious! They do have alternative venues if it rains, but it isn%26#39;t quite the same. We%26#39;re hoping to make it this year!
Mystic Seaport is great anytime, but it is enhanced a LOT by the music! There is nothing like hanging out on the green on a beautiful early summer day, enjoying the waterfront location and the sailboats passing by, while listening to some great music!
How it works is that they will have multiple venues operating simultaneously. They are ';themed'; (maybe music of women and the sea, or whaling, or contemporary music of the sea, etc.) and the performers do a sort of round robin throughout the weekend, coming together in various groupings.
Some of the venues have seating, but others do not, so you may want to consider a blanket or chairs. Some people equip themselves with the whole lot, while others just show up.
As for hotels, a couple of new ones have opened up recently. We%26#39;ve stayed at the Hilton, Whalers Inn (no pool) and a couple of others. I plan to just check here to see what people have stayed recently have to say. We used to take the whole weekend, but lately we%26#39;ve been just going up for Saturday night, so I have to wait until the last minute to make reservations, as in advance, all the hotels tell you it%26#39;s 2 night minimum.
In addition to the regular programming at the Seaport during the day, they also have evening concerts, which are ticketed separately. We%26#39;ve decided to forgo these in recent years because our kids are smaller, and we felt it would make too long of a day.
The Mystic Seaport chanteymen are wonderful, as are many of the others on the guest list this year. We were happy to see a couple of our old favorites were on the roster (may have been in recent years also): Cliff Haslem and Sherri Mortimer.
Try to see a whaling demonstration, especially if Don Sineti is the chanteyman: he typically concludes with the iconic ';Rolling Down to Old Maui.'; The kids also would probably enjoy the Dead Horse Ceremony (nothing to do with an actual dead horse!), as well.
Hope you enjoy it!
