I am going to CT Oct 12-15 and want to see the best fall foliage I can. I am from FL and have no idea what fall looks like. PLEASEEEEE help me find the best spots to view CT%26#39;s fall foliage? Any apple orchards??? Any places I can look down on the leaves from a high point? I want to see lots of leaves and find great picture spots. I will be staying in the Rocky Hill and Newington areas. I don%26#39;t mind driving to see a relly good spot.
Fall Foliage in October??
Sorry, almost certainly too early for fall foliage. Usually not until last 10 days of October (depending on weather of course). If you%26#39;re willing to drive north an hour or two, head into the Berkshires in Massachussets, eg towns of Lenox, Lee for better chance of foliage, or further north into Vermont. The town of Litchfield, CT is great for fall foliage, if it%26#39;s an early fall this year.
Fall Foliage in October??
Hello-
If you want to take a drive I agree that you would see some nice foliage in the Bershires, and Southern Vermont. Litchfield area is always picture perfect. Another option if you are looking for fall activites and want to stay on the eastern side of the state is Glastonbury with apple orchards and farms. A trip to northeastern CT would include Brooklyn (Bison Farm) Pomfret (Sharpe Hill Winery and Orchards there is Lapsley) and Woodstock (Taylor Brook Winery, Farms and Shops the Christmas Barn is fun) and this area is ';Vermont'; like. If you head to southeastern CT Colchester offers Priam winery and a special chesse farm Cato Corner. Preston offers Maple Lane Farm. Ledyard also offers a nice apple orchard on Colonel Ledyard Highway and is on the way to Mystic. Further south in Mystic and Stonington area is Clyde%26#39;s Cider Mill, Stonington Vineyards, Johnathon Edwards Vineyard, Mystic Seaport and Mystic Village Shops along with the Aquarium. Along the shore on Rte 1 there is a nice drive through Essex, and Madison and the Hammonasett Beach Area but not sure if the shops are open like they are in the summer.
Hope you enjoy your trip.
Thank you all soooooo much!
Gillette Castle in East Haddam sits overlooking the Ct River. You can use the Chester Ferry to get there. It%26#39;s a small car ferry. The ride is very short and gets you out on the water for a short time. There are other ways to get there. There are many walking paths. At least one allows you to walk to the river. It is a downhill walk and the walk back is a bit steep. The view from the castle is impressive.
Actually, the leaves are already starting to turn here. You%26#39;ll probably see some good foliage.
The highways are lined with nothing but solid trees, so even driving around you%26#39;ll be able to see a lot.
Hubbard Park in Meriden, which is not far from where you%26#39;ll be staying, has a mountain that you can hike up or drive up (unless the road is closed already for the year) where you should be able to see some beautiful leaves.
There is an apple orchard http://www.lymanorchards.com/ in Southington, also near where you%26#39;ll be staying.
Have a great trip.
Since Rocky Hill is in the Hartford area, I would suggest heading north and going through Mass. into southwestern NH. Foliage ';usually'; peaks around this time and this part of NH is right along the CT River with covered bridges, quaint villages, white steepled meeting houses, apple orchards, and lots of other typical New England fall stuff. From NH I would cross over into southern VT through Brattleboro and Wilmington, over Hogback Mt into Bennington, then south on Rt 7 back into Mass. You can take Rt 90 back to Springfield Ma then South on Rt 91 back to Hartford if you are in a hurry. Or you could meander east on Rt 20, south on Rt 202 then east on Rt 44 back into Hartford. Sounds like a lot, but it basically makes a big loop and we usually do all or part of this route every fall.
I agree completely with newenglandweaver - they have made a great suggestion. i don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll be too early for leaf color, especially in the northern part of the state. If you can make the trek to the top of the mountain from Hubbard Park, you%26#39;ll appreciate the view! Lyman Orchards is a must do for picking your own apples - don%26#39;t forget to try their apple pie, voted best in the state for years!
Enjoy!
