Griswold Museum in Old Lyme

We expect to devote a day in July to Griswold Museum in Old Lyme...in part to view ';Impressionist Giverny: American Painters in France';. Please share tips about visiting the Gris and about the area in general.

Griswold Museum in Old Lyme

I visited the Griswold Museum and House this weekend. The museum had 3 well-lit rooms devoted to the American Impressionists.

We got there around 11:15 and after visiting the museum we decided to walk across the street to the Old Lyme Inn for lunch. They had indoor and outdoor seating but we opted to sit outside since it was such a beautiful day.

After lunch, we went back to tour the gardens and the Florence Griswold House which also had several paintings. I highly recommend a visit to both - all in all, a very pleasant way to spend the day!

Thanks, Nina. That sounds like a good plan for us, too. Is there an audio tour for ';Impressionist Giverny';? No public tours (only group) with a docent for exbibit, museum or house?

the house is the main attraction what you really whant to see are the panels in the dinning room and on some of the doors. these were painted by some of the artests who lodged with miss Grisworld. tours of house are self guided but staff give brife talks about the rooms. there is a modern gallery that has changing exbits a hands on gallery for children and nice gardens.

I don%26#39;t think they have audio tours in the museum. You really don%26#39;t need one. In the house, they have docents around who greet you and give you some background information.

I admit that I%26#39;m an information junkie and always seek out a museum%26#39;s tours. I%26#39;ve watched http://www.youtube.com/user/GriswoldMuseum and see that http://www.flogris.org/ has a garden map to download.

We were already at the museum when it opened at 10 last Tuesday, and that worked for us...but just barely as two tour busses from Long Island arrived shortly thereafter. The docent at the Griswold House said that afternoons are quieter -- no tour groups.

Thanks for the info, will definitely check Griswold Museum/exhibit out.

Nikko4Me, if you go this weekend, you can also enjoy Old Lyme%26#39;s Midsummer Festival...or if you prefer to avoid a crowd, you may want to choose a diffent date to visit.

The festival includes The Shiny Lapel Trio, a nationally recognized, locally based band, swinging classics from the %26#39;30s-%26#39;50s on Friday night 7-9 pm on the river at the Florence Griswold Museum. (We caught them on the Ivoryton Green when we were vacationing and really enjoyed their style.)
