Hotel within safe walk from Amtrak / Metro North?

Hi,

We%26#39;re traveling from Boston to NYC by Amtrak but would like to stay somewhere outside the city and take the Metro North in.

Our primary criterion is that the hotel should be within walking distance of a train station and that the walk be safe!

I have looked at the Hampton and Marriott in Stamford. Apparently this is about 1 hour by train from NYC; that%26#39;s probably the most we would want to ';commute.'; But I%26#39;m having a hard time finding out whether these hotels are safe/walkable from the station.

Any other options? Am I missing another great town with cheap hotels, safe neighborhoods, and good proximity to rail?

Many thanks!

Is there a reason you don’t want to stay in Manhattan? Depending on your date/time of visit, there are some very nice, moderately-priced Midtown hotels in the Grand Central Terminal and Penn Station areas (70 Park Avenue hotel and the Kitano come to mind but there are many others).

Hi,

I live in CT and have been to Stamford many times. The Marriott is very close to the train station and I%26#39;d say it was safe. Of course, you can always call them and ask if they can pick you up at the station if it is after dark....

Thanks for the comments. The primary reason for looking at CT is cost. It seems much cheaper to stay in CT, even though it means buying extra train tickets, than it would be to stay in Manhattan. As far as I can tell, we%26#39;d save more than enough money to pay for the extra hassle.

Still welcome to other suggestions. Thanks!

Perhaps, but instead of being able to return to your hotel room (if you get tired and want to relax, drop off shopping bags, change clothes, get ready for dinner, etc.), you’ll have to lug your personal items and purchases around all day, schlep to Grand Central Terminal and wait for a train to Stamford. Only you can determine what wasting over 2-hours of your time every day plus the added inconvenience are worth...
