Day trip from NYC

Hi everyone

I%26#39;ll be in New York from March 29-April 17 and I definitely want to make time for a day trip to CT, in particular to visit the Yale campus.

What other attractions would you suggest besides the Yale campus?

What would be the best way of getting from the city to CT?

Thanks

Day trip from NYC

The best way to get to New Haven is to take the train from Grand Central Station. And don%26#39;t forget to leave enough time to marvel at the station%26#39;s gorgeous ceiling. And when you get to New Haven admire the restoration of that station and another lovely old ceiling. Just get a cab and ask to be taken to Phelps Gate, Old Campus. That%26#39;s where you get the student led tour of the Yale. Each tour is slightly different. Students do a great job and it%26#39;s great fun to take the tour. You will see sculpture, hear stories and in early spring when you%26#39;re coming you should see some flowering shrubs and flowers.

The quintessential meal in New Haven is pizza. Check earlier posts for a lively discussion about which is best. Stop at Starbucks or Atticus for great coffee. Atticus is a bookstore/cafe across the street from the Yale Art Gallery. Two doors down from Starbucks is a 10,000 Villages, a wonderful shop run by volunteer Mennonites that seels fair trade crafts, jewlery, glass and pottery from many Thrid World countires. Great inexpensive souveniers. A persona farite of mine. And all 3 musuems have great gift shops.

What else to see? Aroundhe campus are 3 world class museums: British Art Center, Yale Art Gallery and the Pabody. The first two are housed in buildings that draw a lot of admiration from architecture buffs. The Peabody has great dinosaurs but the other day when I drove past I saw scaffolding so it may not be open when you come. Just ask your tour guide. A smaller Yale museum but definately worthwhile is the Musem of Ancient Instruments.

If you have time check out the Shubert Theater and the Yale Rep for great palys. And look at the Yale Bulletin for on campus lectures, exhibitions, concerts and films.

Movies? Try the Bow Tie Cinema, a bit of a walk from campus but pleasant on a spring day. Also pick up the free New Hven Advocate to see what%26#39;s happening. There is a lively club scene if that%26#39;s your thing. You can check the Internet to see what the Yale Bulletin and the New Haven Advocate have coming.

New Haven has a classic New England Green, a common with three ancient chruchees. Trinity has the Tiffany windows, the other two exqusite in their austerity.

Have a wonderful visit. I%26#39;m off to your part of the world tomrrow to explore New Zealand.

When in NYC head to Grand Central Station and find a train that goes to New Haven, CT. The trains run pretty regualarly because they serve thousands of commuters between NYC and Connecticut. You want to make sure you get there early though because at rush hour the station is crowded and there are long lines to buy tickets in person or at the electronic booths. Once you buy the ticket just head over to the track (all indoors). There is the option of buying tickets on board the train but that is much more expensive.

The trip should take a little less then 2 hours as New Haven is the last stop. Once you get there head to the front entrance of the building where there is a circular driveway that will be filled with cabs waiting to take you downtown...which is just minutes away.

Downtown New Haven is truly a New England gem. Be sure to go there when the Yale students are there. Yale has done a great job over the last few years at attracting new life to downtown and today there are shops, restaurants, theaters, cafes, bookstores, etc. all over downtown...many of which cater to Yale students.
