Car hire

Hi,

Would any one be able to give me any advise on hire cars???

I will be wanting to go to New Haven in CT on Friday 2nd November from New York Central and returning to JFK on the Monday.

I am trying to find out roughly how much it might cost me to hire a car. Rather than getting the train to New Haven then the train back and a taxi to JFK. The other option woul dbe to get the train to New Haven and hire a car on the Monday morning and drive to JFK. But if it is anything like the UK it is cheaper to hire for a weekend than just for one day!

Any help would be great

Car hire

I live in New Haven- I%26#39;m starting to rent cars one way to NYC when I fly out of JFK or Laguardia- you%26#39;ll have to do the math yourself, as I have some special rates as a Costco member (look at Costco Travel for all kinds of coupons, I%26#39;ve never been asked for my membership card when I book with these). Renting out of NYC is more expensive than renting out of New Haven, even if you rent one way from New Haven. The problem is that I believe the car rentals at the train station are Avis and Hertz which tend to be expensive. I use the Budget near High and George Street, which is much cheaper (check out the Costco Travel website)- they might be able to pick you up from the train station, I believe they offer that service.

It would probably be $35-40 per day for the rental, Iwould guess.

Will you need the car in New Haven? If you don%26#39;t, there are vans that go from New Haven to New York Airports, about $60 one way- Connecticut Shuttle and Primetime Shuttle. For the ultra cheap and long you can take the Metro North train to Grand Central to the Port Authority Bus to the airports, which would probably run $30 depending on time of day.

Hi,

Thats great thanks can I ask how long it would take to drive to JFK on a Monday morning!! I need to be at the airport by 10.30am?

If I did the shuttle bus how long does this take?

Last question!! How long does the train take? I can always get either a taxi or shuttle service from Grand Central to JFK depending on how long it takes.

Hi,

Changed my flight as it was looking like it was going to be a nightmare to get to the airport from New Haven for 10.30am So now I dont need to be there till mid day 12 noon. Will give me more time. So think I%26#39;ll end up getting either the train to Grand Central then a shuttle or the direct bus connection from New Haven to JFK.

Still though any help on times it will take would be great

Are you driving or taking the train? Is your flight at 12 or do you have to be there by 12?

Drive time from New Haven to JFK is about an hour and forty five minutes - no traffic - if you hit traffic, you are looking at anywhere from 2 - 4 hours. Traffic on 95 between 7 am and 10 am is a parking lot.

For car rentals, also check out enterprise.com - they usually have great rates, and will pick you up whereever.

Hi,

No i need to be at the airport for 12 noon. I think i may look at one way rentals and see what cost they are just a bit worried with having to drive and navigate at the same time!! i have driven in the USA before so that side doesnt worry me, it will be just having to drive on a route that i dont know. May have a look and see if it is ONE main road all the way then that will be easier for me!!! Time wise to be sure I would leave New Haven at say 9am.

Or look at the train and then get a taxi from Grand Central to JFK

My suggestion is to keep it simple. Call New Haven limo and go either way with them. Then get a taxi from the limo station to your destination. It will be much more relaxing. Have a good visit. New Haven is a wonderful city. Nancy
