transportation to New York City

We will be in New Haven for a few days and would like to spend a couple days in New York.

What is the best way to travel from New Haven to New York City?

Thanks so much!

Any clue where we should stay in New York? We will have a couple days after our education workshop in New Haven.

It would depend on what you want to see in New York?

Probably the normal tourist sites.

If you%26#39;re interested in Times Square, then it would be best to take Metro North out of New Haven. If you%26#39;re interested in going to lower Manhattan, then it would be better to take Amtrak out of New Haven, because that will bring you in to Penn Station. That%26#39;s closer to China Town, and of course Ground Zero. If you don%26#39;t mind walking, it%26#39;s a lot easier to walk from Grand Central station to Times Square, and then you could even go up 5th Avenue and cut across 50th Street to see Rockefeller Plaza. Hang a left again on 7th or Broadway, and head back down to Times Square.

You got good advice re: traveling to NYC via Metro North out of New Haven directly into Grand Central Terminal.

The ';tourist sites'; in NYC are scattered throughout the city, there%26#39;s not a central area where they%26#39;re all grouped together. It really doesn%26#39;t matter where you stay in the city as the subway is a fast, cheap and efficient method of traveling to get anywhere from here to there. Determine your budget for lodging and let that be your guide.

You%26#39;ll get plenty of ideas for hotels on the TA New York City forum. You can also do a search on TA for NYC lodging suggestions.

I would advise you to NOT stay in Times Square. It is an interesting place to visit (for a few minutes, :)) but I wouldn%26#39;t stay there.

(Just a gentle reminder: The World Trade Center Site is not referred to as ';ground zero'; in the City.)

Too late for the hotel plans. Got what I thought was a good deal on Hotwire for a hotel in Times Square. Turns out to be the Paramount Hotel which got terrible reviews! Guess I am stuck.

Thanks so much for your postings.

What must we see/do while in New Haven?

hmmm. The Paramount. hmmm. Well, they%26#39;ve been doing a lot of work there so ask for an upgrade and pay for a renovated room or suite when you arrive. Check the mattress. This could be the difference between a tolerable stay and an absolute nightmare. They%26#39;re doing a lot of work at this place; not many views around all the scaffolding and I would suspect it%26#39;s very noisy.

How much did you pay and when are you visiting the city?

In New Haven: Yale University campus is worth a visit. Also: You can click on the categories on the left side of this page for ';Things to Do'; in New Haven.

We paid $200 per night. Doesn%26#39;t seem right that Hotwire can list it as a 3 star when all the reviews would list it as a 1- !
