Would anyone have any idea near what city in CT I would be after driving say 5hours having departed from DC? I am trying to secure a hotel stay. I also do not want to end up in a bad area.
My idea is to drive through Norwich as it is my birthtown but never been back to visit from when I was a newborn. I am sure there is not much to explore in Norwich; however, is it worth making a day trip in Mystic, New London, any other suggestion. From Norwich, I am heading towards upstate NY through Hartford, I guess.
Destination Norwich (from DC)
Depending on traffic 5 hours from DC puts you in New York City. Norwich, CT is a bit out of the way for a trip to upstate NY. DC to Norwich is about 61/2 hrs. If thats what you want to do, stop short and stay in New Jersey or continue on and stay maybe in the Milford Ct area. What to see depends on your interests. Mystic Seaport if thats your thing. Huge casinos Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun minutes from Norwich with shops, restaurants and entertainment options. Also a great Native American Museum near Foxwoods.

thanks for the info. I am looking into staying somewhere in NJ since my sister just returned today from Newark and advised me how nice the Hamilton Park and Hudson River area are. I would love to catch a view of NYC. Granted, this stop all depends on where the traffic from DC permits me to be. The next morning, I need to map out my drive to Mystic and finally drive through Norwich. Let me just add that my final destination is Niagra Falls. I still need to plan my route, hopefully, including a scenic road with wineries, markets, etc. Any roads from Hartford lead to Buffalo or that part of NY?
5 hours from DC, without Traffic, puts you around Fairfield, CT - cute little town, not much to see, but safe - they just opened a Best Western - took a tour of it, it%26#39;s very nice and clean. Or you can stop earlier and stay in Stamford - lots of hotels - Marriott, Radisson, etc...
LEaving from Norwich to head up towards Niagara Falls you don%26#39;t need to go through Hartford - take 2W to 84W to 91N to 90 W, the NY State Thruway - that brings you north through MA and across.
Check out the area around Foxwoods / casino / Ledyard - there is a great native american museum. Also Mystic aquarium is a great place if you like that.
Hi, Norwich is getting much better... especially downtown and near the marina. A lot of great old homes have been restored and the city is on the cuspid of a total rebirth.
As mentioned 5hrs will not get you to Norwich or even CT from DC. A long drive without traffic. Try 7-8hrs plus traffic...
Day trips... quentissential New England... Mystic, Stonington and now again New London with some great restaurants and shops on Bank Street and State Street!
