We will be stopping off for a few days at Mystic on our train journey from Boston to New York. Firstly are Mystic and Mystic Seaport separate places. Where would be the best place to stay bearing in mind that we are on foot. We have looked at the Howard Johnson Hotel but it is not clear if it is walking distance from train and for attractions etc. Is the Howard Johnson on the edge of town or central to everything??
Mystic or Mystic Seaport???
Mystic has a couple of things that people like to visit. There are the Aquarium and Mystic Village shops, which are just across the (busy) road from the Howard Johnson Hotel. Then there is Mystic Seaport, which is down the road from that hotel, along the river. You could walk there from HoJos. Besides those two places, if you keep walking past the Seaport, you would take the drawbridge across the river to the center of ';Mystic'; (there isn%26#39;t really a town called Mystic, it%26#39;s just the name for that part of two other towns). There are shops there as well, and some good restaurants. It would be a bit of a walk coming home from there, especially if you%26#39;ve bought things, but it%26#39;s doable.
As far as walking from the train station to the Howard Johnson%26#39;s, I%26#39;m not so sure how long a walk that is. We live about twenty minutes away, so we don%26#39;t use the hotels or the train and haven%26#39;t paid any attention. I%26#39;ll be going down there this weekend, so if you don%26#39;t get any better answers in the meantime, I%26#39;ll check out which hotels are closest to things.
Mystic or Mystic Seaport???
Thanks Winnie your help is appreciated - HoJo gets quite good reviews so as long as its pretty central we may go with that - I will await your advice at weekend. As long as we can walk to get a meal/drink etc I suppose we can always get a cab to/from railway station.
It looks to me like Howard Johnson%26#39;s is as good as any of the other places. It%26#39;s slightly closer to the things you%26#39;d walk to see than the other large hotels. I would recommend getting a cab to the hotel from the train station.
As I said in my previous post, you can definitely walk to the Aquarium %26amp; Mystic Village Shops, as well as to the Mystic Seaport. From there, it%26#39;s a bit further of a walk across the drawbridge to the %26#39;town%26#39; part of Mystic. There isn%26#39;t a hotel that%26#39;s in the center of those two areas, really, so you%26#39;d have to do a bit of walking either way. (I always assume that if you%26#39;re not American, you don%26#39;t mind walking. )
I don%26#39;t know if you have already booked your trip or not...I think the Howard Johnson is on the Northside of Mystic, close to the Aquarium and the Seaport on foot...but the train station is quite a ways away, as is downtown and most of the good restaurants.
If you can afford a truly unique experience contact Josephine at the Mermaid Inn of Mystic, she%26#39;s located 5 mins from Dowtown on foot, 10 minutes to the Seaport and 15 from the Aquarium on foot, plus its a 3 room inn and Josephine will make you such a decadent breakfast every morning that you won%26#39;t need lunch!!
Just a suggestion... Enjoy Mystic, we sure did!
