From Mystic to NYC

Hi all,

Wanting to know how you would go about traveling to NYC to sight see for the day from Mystic? I will have a rental car. I have been told there is a train and it might be easier. Can someone inform me?

Lastly, how much time should I plan to stay in Mystic?

I will be with my daughter who is 15. We are staying at the Mermaid Inn of Mystic.

Thanks.

Mermaidj - My strong suggestion would be to take a train from New Haven, CT into New York City. The train will probably take about 1:45 hours each way. I live in Stamford and with the construction on I-95, it could take double that time in a drive. The train will take you to Grand Central terminal on 42nd St, which is only 5/6 blocks to Times Square.

If you do a search for ';MetroNorth,'; you should be able to find the schedules that suit you. There are usually a couple of trains per hour. Believe me, it%26#39;s the only way to go.

I%26#39;m no pro for Mystic, so I%26#39;ll leave that to someone with more experience.

Thank you so much for the input. How do I get from Mystic to the train station. I am thinking of just leaving my rental car there and maybe staying a day or two in the city. Will it be safe?

Thanks again,

Mermaidj

I-95 will take you directly into New Haven. It is called the ';New Haven line'; for MetroNorth. For specific directions, google it and do a mapquest. Since I travel from a different direction, it would get a little confusing.

As far as safety in New York, don%26#39;t worry about it. There are so many people walking around all hours of the day/night, you%26#39;ll feel very safe. Just use basic common sense and you%26#39;ll be fine.

There is an Amtrak station right in Mystic also. It is on Roosevelt Avenue. It is called the Mystic Depot Welcome Center. I believe you can just leave your car parked there if need be.

I agree that amtrak is the best bet. If you buy on line at least 3 days in advance you can get a discount wiht a AA number. They have other discounts available too.

Thank you everyone. It sounds like a fun trip. Lastly, from Mystic going back to Boston is there anyting special we should see or do?

Visit Newport, day trip to Block Island or stay overnight on Martha%26#39;s Vineyard.

All the previous posts are correct. However, if you have a budget to consider, think about driving into the city (NY). Especially if you go down on a Saturday or Sunday. You can park for ~$30/day tops and the traffic in the city isn%26#39;t too bad. If you drive to New Haven, you will have to pay to park anyway. Although if there is construction or an accident, etc, it can be awful. We live in Mystic and always drive down. We have a family of five though and that is part of the cost equation. If cost is not an issue, take the Amtrack from Mystic. No brainer there.

I second the Block Island trip if you have the time. Go there for a day and you will feel like you have been away for a week.

Enjoy

I would definitely spend more than the part of one day you%26#39;ll get in NYC if you day trip from Mystic (either by train or car.) New York City is roughly 110 miles from Mystic and, I think by definition, that means it%26#39;s not a day trip even if traffic wasn%26#39;t a factor. Plus trying to see anything in New York in half a day is like going to London or Paris for the same amount of time! You just wouldn%26#39;t. Treat yourself to a quality experience and spend at least a couple of nights there. By the way, if anyone know where you can park in NYC for $30/day please post that!

I am traveling with my teenage daughter as well this summer and it looks like we are doing a very similar trip. How was the place you stayed in Mystic? Any suggestions about do%26#39;s or don%26#39;ts there? Thanks
