I am traveling through connecticut from Maryland on our way to Maine. We are taking the Tappin Zee Bridge in New York. I have narrowed it down to two different options. I want to take the way through Hartford. We can either take the Merritt Parkway (Route 15) or I-684 from Route I-287. If I take Route 15, it eventually turns into I-91 and up to Hartford and then I would get on I-84 into Massachusetts. If I take I-684, it becomes I-84 and I could either take that straight through Hartford and on to Massachusetts or I could take I-691 to I-91 North and in Hartford get on I-84. Out of all these ways, which way is the fastest and least traffic?
Thanks-
Traveling thorough Connecticut
684 TO 84 takes you east thru the middle of the state - the least of the congested routes ... happy travels !
Traveling thorough Connecticut
Thanks- Is it not much farther in distance either? Does it go way out of the way? Is it alright to go straight through Hartford or would I-691 to I-91 up to Hartford be better?
Thanks-
taking 84 from Newburgh NY into Conn is more direct to get you straight thru western new england (hitting waterbury and hartford), proceeding on 84 you are actually tracking in a east - north easterly direction, this interstate road ends at I-90 in Mass, from there you proceeed eastbound.. and onto roads that connect you back up with 95 again.
Trust me , I-95 thru southern connecticut is a rubber-necking nightmare ...
I know all about I-95, I have done it. What about Route 15 (The Merritt Parkway)? Should I take I-84 straight or cut over to I-91 via I-691 from I-84?
NOPE!
this complicates the drive , don%26#39;t take 691 to 91, stay on the the hypotenuse side of the triangle, I-84 , this is a shorter trip.
... If you get off 84 and go 691 to 91north, you%26#39;d be routing yourself to 2 sides of that triangle between waterbury and hartford ,,and,, to get yourself back on track, you%26#39;re going to pick up I-84 east again in Hartford to get up to I-90 in Mass. so stay on I-84 thru Connecticut, this is rather simple. Does this make any sense?
TAKE I-84 thru Connecticut STRAIGHT TO I-90
I see how it looks like RT 15 thru CT would be easier off of the Tappan Zee, (but the Merritt has some serious traffic issues)
You can make it to CT in an hour....
After the Tappan Zee (rt 87), get onto 287 for not even a mile and take the Saw Mill Pkwy exit North in Elmsford to Katonah (30 min drive) onto 684 and to Brewster (15 mins) to I-84 Danbury CT ....take that east to Mass.
I will message you this map...
I think I actually drove the Merritt Parkway some and I think I cut over to 95 thinking it would be better. I was wrong. The reason I keep mentioning the I-691 to I-91 back to I-84 because thats what all the mapping programs are telling me to do and even someone on another forum suggested this. Yes, I-84 is the hypotenuse of the triangle, but I was wondering if the I-691 to I-91 is less congested or something? Only one mapping program has suggested I take I-84 all the way through. I-84 seems to cut right through the city of Hartford while I-91 brushes part of it. But, I guess it won%26#39;t be rush-hour when I am coming through. Also, near the Tappin Zee Bridge, why not take I-684 directly from I-287. I can see the hypotenuse of a triangle thing by taking the Sawmill Parkway, but the Sawmill Parkway isn%26#39;t all freeway like I-684. In Massachusetts, should I take I-90 to I-495 or I-290 to I-495?
Thanks-
Yes up around these parts there is plenty of cause and affect... grinding our travel time down to a hault ... I agree
the contruction hotspots can completely change
the direction you take for this trip !!
-due to this, it doesnt matter if it is more direct or not !!
you could use routemaster from AAA :
www.aaa.com/routemaster/html/rmusmap.html
Still, it would be nice to know what times of day road projects begin/end... night travel to make better time is a thing of the past , since these days we%26#39;ve all seen night crews working as if its broad daylight...
It dosen%26#39;t seem like any construction. But, sometimes it say%26#39;s there is none and there is! Does it matter if I just take I-684 from I-287 instead of the Sawmill Parkway, that is not all freeway? Construction is a factor on traffic. But, do you think there is any difference in traffic between I-84 through Hartford or the I-691 to I-91 back to I-84 way? Same question for the previous also.
Thanks-
I%26#39;d say sure,
You can go 684 to 287 - skipping the Saw Mill should be OK if you want to do that...., listen to news radio 880 for traffic and weather on the ';eights';!
heck not to long ago,... the Tappan Z Br was closed down due to a collision and vehicle fire, even damaged the deck of the bridge it was so bad
....so the occurance of delays in the Tri-state can happen anywhere anytime .
.. I will never forget my experience on the DC beltway ...long story that started at the Maryland welcome center trying to make it back to CT in our Penske truck rental.
...anyway, ... I would get to 84 and stick to that, you will be fine.
