Fairfield County Seafood Recommendation?

Please help me! I have tried several sea food restaurants in fairfield county and none have been very good, including Black Rock Oyster Bar in Fairfield and Ocean Drive in Norwalk.

Being from RI, I am dying for a place where you can just go and get good solid seafood and not pay a million dollars for it.

We would prefer lower fairfield county somewhere from norwalk north but at this point are willing to take any suggestions.

Also looking for restaurants with raw bars included.

Thanks!

Fairfield County Seafood Recommendation?

Conte%26#39;s in Westport is very good. Fresh fish, raw bar, etc.

The Crab Shell in Stamford also has good seafood and is right on the water on Southfield Ave.

Fairfield County Seafood Recommendation?

You could also try Harbor Lights in Norwalk. Not inexpensive, but fairly decent and they have a raw bar.

Frankly, we usually make the drive up beyond New Haven if we need a good fish-fix. Lenny%26#39;s in Branford, Lenny and Joe%26#39;s in Madison and Westbrook, or Flanders Fish Market in East Lyme would be good choices.

Hi:

Thanks for the recommendations, I%26#39;ll have to try some of these places. Isnt it funny that it seems there are so few to choose from around here when there is a beautiful coast line as a perfect setting?

I appreciate the responses. If I find any others on my own, I%26#39;ll be sure to report back.

Hi, I also love seafood and find it funny that there are not many places around ! Some of the best food is close to you in Stratford at the Shell Station, located at the train station. Have you tried the Oyster River Tavern? It is by the water, just over the Milford line in West Haven. I have only recently discovered it.

Does anyone know of a turkish or hungarian market in Norwalk? I have been told there is one but the person couldn%26#39;t recall the name. They said that it had wonderful produce at an unbelievable rate. Thanks!

  • Walk from Mystic Hilton to Seaport

Is it possible to walk from the Hilton to the Seaport? I will be pushing a stroller. It does not seem that far distance wise but I don%26#39;t know if the roads have sidewalks.

Walk from Mystic Hilton to Seaport

The hotel is literally across the street from the aquarium. 150 yards door to door at most. It would take you almost as long (longer maybe) to pack up the kid(s), drive across the street, park and walk from your car to the aquarium entrance.

So unless the weather is bad or you plan to buy lots of gifts, walking is certainly an option.

Walk from Mystic Hilton to Seaport

Thanks. Is the Seaport that close as well?

Sorry, I had aquarium on my mind when I responded. No, the seaport is probably too far to reasonably walk. You should plan on taking the car.

    Thanks

    Day Trip from Boston

I%26#39;m spending a few days in Boston later in the year and would like to spend a day taking a trip to visit the Mark Twain house and museum. Also, I%26#39;d like to take a trip to Gillette castle as well. Relying on the Greyhound from Boston to Hartford, how easy would it be to get from there to Gillette Castle and is it remotely feasible to do all this in one day.

    Day Trip from Boston

Not too easy. You would need a car, it%26#39;s about 35 - 45 minutes. It%26#39;s right on the river

    Day Trip from Boston

You will NOT have time to both in one day and enjoy them. It will take you like an hour for a tour in the Mark Twain House and to see Gillette Castle (from Hartford) it is like a 45 minutes drive, getting in line for the tickets (you are not guaranteed entrance) due to the fact that they only do small tours and then seen the castle itself. I would STRONLY suggest checking out The Mark Twain house. It is only minutes away from the train station by cab, bus or even a walking distance. It is such a beautiful house, with a well talented tour guide and a nice tourist shop. Next door to his place, you can find Harriett Beecher Stowe%26#39;s home. You can go to www.MarkTwainHouse.org and get more info. Welcome to CT! :)

GILLETTE CASTLE STATE PARK (67 River Road, East Haddam, Conn.; 860-526-2336; online at dep.state.ct.us/stateparks/parks/gillettecastle.htm) is open all year free. Tours of the castle are given from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Memorial Day to Columbus Day and cost $5, and $3 for ages 6 to 17. To get there from Interstate 91, take Exit 22 and Routes 9S and 82E; from Interstate 95, take Exit 69, Routes 9N and 148, and the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry ($3 a car), which operates in spring, summer and fall.

Traveling to Hartford from NJ on a Friday in June

What is the best route and how is the traffic coming from NJ to Hartford on a Friday? I was told you could sit on the George Washington Bridge forever. The directions I was given are 95 North to Exit #48 for I-91 North. Is this the best way?

Traveling to Hartford from NJ on a Friday in June

It depends on what time of day you are driving - Later in the day (from about 3 pm - 7 pm), the traffic is horrendous - You can also go up the Merritt Parkway (Hutchinson) to 91N - it is a guessing game, because either way can be bad depending on time of day / accidents / construction

Traveling to Hartford from NJ on a Friday in June

Listen to 880 and 1010 AM as you approach New York for traffic reports every 10 minutes. Listen to see what areas are worst. If the GW Bridge is backed up on one level, take the other. If it is backed up on both levels, you can head for another bridge or tunnel. I-95 east out of New York is referred to as %26#39;Cross-Bronx%26#39; on thereports and is usually slow. In most cases, the Merritt Parkway will be a better option than I-95, but listen to those traffic reports!

Thank you very much. I have been going online to find trafic reports but with no luck so I will write down those alternate ways and the radio stations. Thanks Again!

If you%26#39;re leaving from south or west of 287, take that road into New York and merge onto 684 north after crossing the Tappan Zee Bridge. Follow 684 to its end at I-84, then turn east and that%26#39;ll take you right into Hartford.

I visit almost every weekend from New Jersey to New England and I am heading Hartford CT this weekend again ... yes, today is Friday ... I normally take Garden State Parkway to 287 East thru Tappen Zee Bridge, then I-95.

I normally chicken out as soon as I saw traffic to have a dinner before continuing. Depending when I leave home, I could have a nice dinner at Rt 46, or at Chuck E Cheese as soon as get on 287, take the first exit. Or, have dinner at Paradise Park Place food court.

If I hit the traffice approaching white plains, there is nice PF Chang%26#39;s at the Westchester Mall where there is also nice food court. Sometimes, I hit traffic at Stamford CT area, then I went to Towncenter Mall, another one is great is Millford x39B where there is a Borders and Postal Mall and Westfield Mall.

After that, I seldom hit traffice, but if I never hit traffice and pass all above places, I would go to Mohegan Sun Casino for nice buffet, will not close by 11pm on weekend nights.

Don%26#39;t EVER think of GW Bridge, forget about the radio, by the time you know there is a traffic, you got stuck and can NOT get out. Well, even so, my trick is to ';sleep'; in the car while waiting, you can easily wait for an hour, bumper to bumper ...

The charter bus for school event to Boston take Fwy 287 all the way to pass Tapen Zee Bridge then Fwy 684-N then I-84-East, as one suggested, but that%26#39;s good if you heading Boston, NOTHING quite interesting on the road. Most interesting things is on I-95. Even so, if you take that route, you can visit Danbury Mall and military museum or have a nice Old Country Buffet at Waterbury before visit the Barnes %26amp; Noble next door, the clock museum.

Another problem with that route is that it is mountain route on I-84, and you can%26#39;t just set cruise and relax, and it is 20 more miles as I measure once.

If you really want to see the nice view on GW Bridge and avoid traffic, I found if I leave home after 6pm, I would normally be fine, and that%26#39;s when I heading Boston. I would just drive thru NJ Turnpike and GW Bridge and I-95 and arrive Mohegan Sun at 9:30pm for later buffe dinner, around 11pm, take i-395-N to I-90-E to arrive Framingham Residence Inn or Summerfields Suites at 1am so that I would have a complimentary breakfast the next day before heading destination ...

It is very tire each time back from Boston to take I-84 to I-684 ... Better drive I-95 all the way thru GW Bridge. I have found if I leave CT after dinner, I would be fine. So, when I came back from Boston, I made sure I stop somewhere, say, Mohegan Sun, to have a dinner before heading back NJ ... If I tried to rush, I would end up got stuck somewhere along the route ...

  • Meadows Music Centre

Can anyone recommend a nice but inexpensive hotel near the Meadows Music Center???

    Meadows Music Centre

We have stayed several times at the Crowne Plaza Hotel to attand concerts at the Meadows. It is about 6 blocks from the ';theatre'; and several concert goers who also park there. It is probably not the cheapest, that would be the Super 8 in the other direction on the same street, but I wouldn%26#39;t stay there.......

    Meadows Music Centre

The Hartford Hilton has just undergone a 30 million dollar renovation is now a four star hotel. The hotel has 392 rooms and is attached to the Civic Center which is being transformed into a 36 story residential apartment tower. The hotel is in the central business district, close to I-84 and I-91 and about 5 minutes to Meadows.

In reference to the last post - How bad is the Super 8? There reviews said very friendly and clean just bad location. We will be staying just one night after a concert, but I am a little anal when it comes to bugs and cleanliness.

I think I would pass on the Super 8 in Hartford. As suggested, the Hilton or the Crowne Plaza are good choices if you want to stay right in Hartford. If they are too pricey, then you may want to look at staying in East Hartford. There is a Holiday Inn there - I84 Exit 58. Manchester is just a little bit further - but a nice town to stay in. Lots of restaurants and shops and very safe. You could look into Clarion Suites Inn, Econo Lodge, Fairfield Inn %26amp; Suites or the Courtyard by Marriott.

SweetPea - I took your advice and canceled at Super 8 and went with Crown Plaza. I am getting two different directions one says get off at 29A and the other 32B, which is better. How realistic is the walk to the Meadows. Thanks!

Went to Tom Petty and stayed at the Crowne Plaza - it was great, very clean large quiet rooms the price was a little more than I wanted to spend but well worth it. It is within walking distance from the Meadows, but it is a good hike. Most of the parking is that way anyway so you would be walking that far. The city is dead at night, we got back from the concert at midnight, room service was closed there was no one on the streets and the only thing we could find within walking distance to eat was pizza and beer. We couldn%26#39;t believe how empty the streets were. Overall great concert and going back to a great hotel made it worth the six hour drive.

When we go to summer concerts there, we stay at the Motel 6, which was called Red Roof Inn, now Motel 6. If you are only going to lay your head to sleep and not spend much time in the room, I found this place to be just fine! I am typically picky when it comes to hotels, but this place was clean and served its purpose. The best part is the rate is only about $50 per night!! It is the closest hotel to the venue, literally a block away. I wouldn%26#39;t suggest the Super, as it seems to be more of a truck stop type of hotel. The Motel 6 fills up with concert go%26#39;ers. Can%26#39;t wait to go back up there...July 16th for 3 Doors Down and August 20th for Motely Crue!!!!

The music center is now called New England Dodge Music Center (formerly Meadows Music) at 61 Savitt Way Hartford, CT 06120 If you bid on priceline $50 you can get Crown Plaza.

    Early check-in

Go to www.hartford.com and check out some hotels. I don%26#39;t think that there are any early arrivals (they tend to check in around 2pm) best bet is to call and ask.

  • Moving to the Hartford area

My husband may be getting a promotion and relocation to Hartford. We currently live in northern Virginia. We have two kids, 6 and 4, and are looking for a suburban area with good schools, nice homes, etc. His office will be in downtown Hartford. Any suggestions on where to live without going broke?! Thanks!

    Moving to the Hartford area

Try Glastonbury, West Hartford, Rocky Hill or Newington. Glastonbury is a great town but you have to get acroos a bridge to get downtown. In West Hartford you get get downtown on city streets if the highway is crowded. Its got great schools with renowned music programs and a vibrant town center. Its an older community so the lots are not that large.

    Moving to the Hartford area

Rocky Hill is a nice town about 15 minutes from Hartford. It has many childrens programs (sports, clubs, ect.) and a very good school system. I am a senior at Rocky Hill High School currently and have been in this school system since kindergarten. We have three elementary schools, a middle and a high school. One of the Elementary Schools is just K-2 and this is and excellent option if you live in the right area because it is nice and small. We have many parks that include playgrounds, sports fields/courts, pool, ampitheater, ice skating, good sledding hills, ect.. It is pretty much a middle class town but does have a ';rich'; side (although nothing compared to Glastonbury and West Hartford). The homes are very nice and you shouldn%26#39;t have to much trouble finding one. You may also want to consider Newington, Cromwell or Wethersfield (especially old wethersfield). I%26#39;m not sure how the school systems are but they are nice middle class towns. Good Luck!

All the towns posted in the previous three posts are nice residential towns bordering Hartford. Might I suggest looking in the Farmington Valley area. Your commute time may add an extra 15-20 min. to Hartford, but many of these towns have more of a rural feel, but still have the conveniences of all the services and shopping you will need. Depending on your price range, you can still find a moderatly sized 3 bedroom home in the $200,000 to $300,000 range. This website may help www.farmingtonvalleyvisit.com

It is too late for me, but if I am going to choose a town near Hartford to live, I am going to pick Wallinford CT and send my kids to Choate Rosemery Hall Preparotory http://www.choate.edu/home/ why? Read this ... choate.edu/admission/25greatreasons.asphttp:鈥?/a>

I would suggest West Hartford....But it can be very expensive to get a home there but the schools are top class. In Hartford if you decide...I would suggest go go to the Farmington Avenue area, they have nice homes for reasonable prices. I would also suggest...Newington, CT. It%26#39;s only 10 minutes away from Hartford.

I was born in Newington, lived there until the age of 8 when my parents divorced. Our family just moved back here, about 2 1/2 months ago. Wanted a nice community with a great school system.

There are three hotels on Dayhill Road, A Marriott, a Marriott Courtyard and a Hilton Gardens, any of those would be OK. There is a hotel in Windsor Center, but it looks sort of dumpy. You could stay in Hartford, more to do (the Day Hill area is filled with office parks). There are also a lot of airports around Bradley Airport (there is a bowling alley near the airport, but not much else), which is only 10 - 15 minutes away.

    Sooooooooooooo???????

How was the concert? Inquiring minds wanna know!

    Naomi :-)

Overall, it was great. Madonna certainly can put on a good show: dancers, outfits, stage effects. What was disappointing is that she came on 45 minutes late, played for one and a half hours, and no encoure. A lot of new stuff too, sort of hoped for more old songs. Needless to say, my $60 ticket was well spent, but I%26#39;m not sure those who paid $200+ are saying the same thing! Thanks for asking!

I can understand your disappointment. I love the %26#39;old Madonna%26#39; songs, Like A Virgin etc.....

    Heck, I love all 80%26#39;s music ;-)

I had hoped to see Billy Joel @ The Civic Center a few months back but never ended up getting there. We were in the process of selling/buying a home at the time.

I assume it was a lot of the same with that concert as well, more new stuff than old.

    Glad you enjoyed your evening.

    Trying to stay dry,

    Naomi :-)

The concert was AWESOME! She gets better with age! She WARNED fans that this tour is going to concentrate mostly on her new cd (so I was NOT expecting much of the oldies) she did performed Like A Virgin, La Isla Bonita, Erotica, Lucky Star, Ray or Light and as always..she changed the beat to them and they were GREAT! One thing that I HATE about certain artist is that after many years...they give a show and they songs are exactly the same. Sometimes you need to add a new twist to make it fit in todays time. She LOOKED amazing. I was really not upset of her being late because I have seen her twice before and she is known to come in late. The ONLY embarrasment was that she had to tell people in the front rows to get up and dance instead of sitting down with their arms crossed. I was way up in the the bleachers and I stood all night long and dance my arse off! I was HAPPY that she made a stop in Hartford, CT...see Hartford IS Connecticut%26#39;s rising star!*****.

Dan, sounds like you had a great time!

    Good for you :-)

Advice for a Southerner considering relocation to Conn.??

We are considering a move as part of husband%26#39;s career advancement. He%26#39;d likely end up in Stamford. We know cost of living is 48% higher. *Gulp!* What else should we know? What does that cost of living difference mean in your daily life? What%26#39;s cool? Where should we look at apartments/houses/condos? Thanks in advance for any constructive input.

Advice for a Southerner considering relocation to Conn.??

It depends on exactly what you are looking for - yes, the cost of living is higher, but so are the salaries. If you give more detail about what you want in terms of living, I can point you to some areas (I live in Stamford). Personally, I love the Cove or Shippan areas - you would be close to the water, in a quiet area, but only a 5 minute drive towards town. If you want more of a country atmosphere, look in the areas of High Ridge and Long Ridge Road. You will find that rental costs can decrease if you move towards the suburbs of Stamford instead of directly in town.

Advice for a Southerner considering relocation to Conn.??

    Hi!

You%26#39;ll have to get used to the winter weather and driving conditions on snow. I don%26#39;t know what part of the South you are coming from and if you have heavy snowfall in the winter (N.C. or Virginia, perhaps?).

The trick is to take it slow if you are not familiar with this kind of driving. Municipalities clear the snow from the roads and streets as soon as they can, but...ice can be treacherous, especially ';black ice'; which you can%26#39;t see at night. Unless you both drive four-wheel-drive vehicles, this is the best advise we can give you. Winter is about to end (we all hope) and you%26#39;ll have time to get prepared for next season starting around November, sometimes even sooner. Be ready to shovel a lot of snow unless you live in a condo and everything is taken care of for you. I know snow can be beautiful but is also a pain in the neck after a while, and winters here are TOO long sometimes.

    Enjoy your stay.

I%26#39;ve had 19 homes and CT is definitely the best. Been here for 24 years and never want to leave. It%26#39;s the smartest state with consistently highest test scores. Your housing costs will be tied to the schools%26#39; reputation. Lots to choose from but pricey. Try renting and get to know the state before plunking down millions for a home. caveat: A supt from RI took a job in Ct and when he saw the house prices he went right back to RI.

People in Stamford and the rest of Fairfield identify strongly with NY and watch NY news and read the NYTimes. Ct will seem cold in climate and temperament coming from the South. We%26#39;re not all cranky Yankees just reserved and respectful of privacy. Compared to the South no one in Ct ever discusses relison. Politics way more liberal than what you%26#39;re used to. Hope you learn to love us.nkp

Thanks for the replies, they were very interesting to read. We are a DINKS couple (both work, no kids) and so while we are interested in schools b/c, as one poster noted, they are tied to property values, that isn%26#39;t the top concern. My husband travels some on biz, so I am interested in somewhere safe to walk my dog at night. Here in Richmond, I used to live in an area of the city like D.C.%26#39;s Georgetown. But crime became a concern. Now we live in a golf course community (suburbs). We%26#39;re not sure if I will be able to get a job immediately, so we are very concerned about COST.

That having been said: what neighborhoods should I be looking at?

And what do you locals like to do? We are pretty active -- running, working out at the local gym, hiking, mountain bikes and such. What are the options up there (once the snow melts)?

Without kids, I would look toward Stamford as there is more nightlife, theater etc. I will leave it toward those in those areas to recommend neighborhoods, although I also like Shippan and the being near the water. Stamford also has more options regarding type of housing i.e. townhouses, condos, apartments, larger homes, and smaller homes as well.

Regarding activities, you can find whatever you like here as well. Plenty of hiking, running, biking, some skiing here in CT, and Vermont is close enough for weekend jaunts, Also sailing, boating, kayaking are all available. There is also antiquing, museums, and being in

close proximity to NYC allows easy access for theater there as well as all that NYC has to offer. There are several universities in Fairfield county or environs also.

You didn%26#39;t mentions what field you may looking for a job in, but Stamford is home to several hospitals and financial services have been taking advantage of proximity to NYC with lower overhead. So good luck!! We moved from FL so I understand sticker shock, but we love it here.

Again, I would highly recommend the area near the Cove - Cove Island Park has the beach, a wonderful hiking / biking path, ball fields, a skating rink, etc... I live one block from the beach on a quiet, dead end road, but I am 5 minutes from downtown and the nightlife / shopping. You will often see people out walking their dogs at night, and I have never been concerned about safety. The area is filled with multifamilies and condos. For an active lifestyle, I think it is one of the better areas of Stamford to be in.

There are a ton of gyms here, and you can search them online - the major ones are Golds, Planet Fitness, and NY Sports Club - we also have a YMCA (although parking is awful) or you can join the Jewish Community Center, which has a pool and fitness facility.

Summer time brings alot more activity to the area - Farmer%26#39;s markets, Live at 5 on Thursday nights, etc...

Stamford will be undergoing some major changes over the next few years - they are tearing down the old Pitney Bowes Plant (a huge landmark) and putting a shopping / restaurant / condo center in the south end, which will do a ton to revitalize a dying area. Trump just announced that he will be building a tower here. The job market, especially in finance, is great here - plus you are close to NYC, so it is an easy train ride into the city.

I would also recommend buying the Fairfield County Entertainment book - you can get them online at entertainment.com - That will give you a TON of discounts, such as buy one get one free at restaurants, movie tickets, shopping, etc.... for the $30 you spend for the book, if you use it twice at a restaurant, you have gotten your money back.

Hi, we relocated here from the southwest awhile ago so I know what you are talking about. The biggest difference in cost is the housing cost. After that, it%26#39;s pretty much the same. You definately want to live in Stamford, either North Stamford ot down by the ocean. Buy a house if you can afford it, stretch if you have to. It%26#39;s a beautiful city and it really grows on you. Very livable and growing.Tons to do all up and down the coast here.

I am from Stamford, and yes I love NYC. I do not as someone mentioned read any of the NY newspapers. Here in Stamford we have our OWN paper, and a news station covering Southern Fairfield County. They may not be the best, but they%26#39;re the same as everywhere else.

Having been born and raised in Stamford, I can tell you that it is a great place to live and a wonderful place to raise a family. Having said that, keep a few things in mind:

If you choose to live in North Stamford - the area north of the Merritt pkwy (rt. 15) - you will pay dearly for it. This is an affluent section of the city. Expect to pay easily over 600K for small capes and ranches (if you can find any.) Colonials will be much more than that. New house constructions in N Stamford rarely start less than 700-800K and many are over 1 mil. Many other areas between downtown and N. Stamford are very nice (NewfieldAve./Pepper Ridge Rd area, Turn of River, Rippowam, Westover, et al. but you%26#39;re still looking at 500K+ for small houses. You%26#39;ll find better prices on the East side, West side, and Cove area, but the school systems are weaker - more crime, etc.

Traffic in Stamford has gotten ridiculous. AM and PM rush hours are awful if you%26#39;re trying to get across town. Stamford is a very busy and bustling town and has many corporate headquarters and large corporations within its boundaries. That makes for a ton of traffic coming in in the morning and leaving in the afternoon/evening.

Crime is a problem in Stamford, particularly on the west and east sides, as well as the south end and downtown in the area of the mall. Not that you need to be afraid of these areas, but certainly caution and common sense should prevail. Some of Stamford%26#39;s best restaurants and cultural activities are in these areas. Gang activity is also on the rise on the west side and downtown.

As someone else mentioned in their post, Stamford is heavily influenced by NY. Stamford (and much of lower Fairfiled County) retains very little of that ';New England Charm.'; South western CT has much more of a big city look, feel, and attitude than other areas of the state. You won%26#39;t find many charming bed %26amp; breakfasts or Yankee sensibilites in Stamford and the surrounding towns.. Most people follow the Yankees, Mets, Knicks, and Giants as opposed to the Red Sox, Pats or Celtics.

Warts and all, Stamford is a good town full of good, hardworking people. Much of my family still resides there and I wouldn%26#39;t trade growing up there for anything.

Having also been born and bred in Stamford, I highly agree that we are for the most part a hardworking group. As far as crime downtown, I have owned a codo here for over a year, and have not experienced any threat of violence. Love it here and also where my parents live in the Roxbury/Westhill section.

  • Nice restaurant on the water for bachelorette party dinner?

    Hi Everyone,

I am looking for a nice seafood restaurant in Mystic-in town or the Seaport- for 15 girls to eat at for my sister%26#39;s bachelorette party. Preferably a restaurant where we can eat outside, and that can accomodate all of us outside.

    Any suggestions?

Nice restaurant on the water for bachelorette party dinner?

You could try S%26amp;P Oyster it%26#39;s in town on the river. They have an outside patio as well. I don%26#39;t know if they can accomidate 15 outside, but it%26#39;s worth a call. The Inn at Mystic/ Flood Tide has a Sunday brunch with nice views of the sound. They have beautiful grounds with pond , waterfall, and lots of flowers which would be great for pictures.

Nice restaurant on the water for bachelorette party dinner?

For a shoreline area we have very few outdoor eateries.

I%26#39;ve lived here my whole life and have never been to S%26amp;P Oyster so I can%26#39;t comment on the quality of the food, however, the patio looks like an excellent setting for an outdoor party.

There is also Skippers Dock in Stonington village (10 minute drive from downtown Mystic). I recently ate there and though the food was very good, the view excellent, great service and frozend drinks, I think its a bit overpriced. $16.95 for fish and chips is a bit crazy.

It%26#39;s not outside dining, but there%26#39;s upstairs room at the Daniel Packer Inn (http://www.danielpacker.com/banquets.html). It%26#39;s perfect for 15 people and is private, and you can always look out the windows to the river. :0

    Restaurant next to Brooklyn Bridge

    Hello,

We are going to New York City next week end and we are looking for a nice place to have dinner with a view to Manhattan from the Brooklyn side. Any thoughts?

    Thanks,

    LD

    Restaurant next to Brooklyn Bridge

You should post this request in the new york city forum, there are a lot of local experts there who have great ideas.

    Restaurant next to Brooklyn Bridge

The River Cafe is the best option, but note that it is VERY pricey and nouveau french cuisine.

More affordable options would be Pete%26#39;s Downtown (Italian) and Bubby%26#39;s (Comfort Food).

Call in advance to reserve a seat with a view.

    lunch near port chester?

We%26#39;re driving on a Sunday leaving around 7am from Boston to Harrisburg, PA. In looking at the map it seems that Port Chester is our 1/2 way point. Is there a nice place we can stop for lunch nearby? It would be me and my two kids who are 9 and 10 so casual and easy is the name of the game.

    Thanks!

    lunch near port chester?

If you and your children like (Asian) Indian food, I recommend the buffet lunch at Tandoori restaurant on North Main Street in Port Chester, NY. They have a variety of main dishes, vegetable dishes, salad, bread (naan), dessert (such as rice pudding, vermicelli pudding, or gulab jamun), and beverage, for about $12 per person. From I-95 in CT, take exit 2 and drive on Delavan Ave. through Byram (CT) to Port Chester, NY, then take a left on Main St. and drive down a short distance until you come to Tandoori on your left hand side.

If Indian food is not up your alley, try the Glory Days Diner on East Putnam Avenue in neighboring Greenwich, CT. for typical American diner food. From I-95 southbound, take Exit 3 in CT, turn right at end of ramp onto Arch St., continue several blocks to Mason St. Turn left onto Mason St., continue several blocks until Putnam Ave. (Rte. 1). Turn right onto Putnam Ave. Look for Glory Days Dinner a short distance down on your left hand side.

    lunch near port chester?

Thank you! The diner sounds like a good bet for us.

I%26#39;m now wondering if route 95 may not be that great of a way to go since I%26#39;ve read a few bad things about traffic slowdowns.

It%26#39;s true that congestion on I-95 is often really bad in some places.

On the other hand, it depends on what day and time of day. Early enough on a Sunday morning it shouldn%26#39;t be bad, even in summer.

I suggest you consider moving up your departure time to 6:00am or 6:30 am (instead of 7:00 am), taking some snacks in the car to tide you over between meals, and not stopping to eat until after you have crossed over the George Washington Bridge into New Jersey. This will mean another half-hour or so in the car before you get your meal break, but it should get you safely beyond several potential I-95 bottlnecks before the traffic builds up.

By the way: the New Jersey Turnpike has quite a few rest stops right along the highway, where one can get gas, meals, etc. Most of them provide a choice of restaurants in which to eat (primarily hamburger and pizza chains, such as Big Boy, Sbarro%26#39;s, or the like). I wouldn%26#39;t call them ';nice'; restaurants, but you%26#39;ll save time, you won%26#39;t get lost, and the ';cuisine'; is just the type that many 9- or 10-year old stomachs yearn for.

If you%26#39;re willing to eat burgers but you can%26#39;t wait until New Jersey, there are also some rest stops along the southern part of I-95 in Connecticut (from around New Haven to around Darien or Norwalk, if I recall correctly), which feature McDonald%26#39;s restaurants.

    Oh thanks for those tips!!!

Trust me I%26#39;d LOVE to get started at 6am or 6:30am but I%26#39;d hear about it all the way there from the little ones in the back seat!! They%26#39;re already freakin%26#39; over having to be out of the house by 7am!!!

  • I-84 thru CT

Passing thru CT on I-84 north/eastbound next week and just wondering why Mapquest detours me off I-84 onto I-691 SE of Hartford. Is there major construction to avoid in this area? Or is it to just avoid downtown traffic? We hope to be coming thru mid-morning and not in rush hour. Any help or advice will be appreciated!

    Thanks, in advance.

    -jc

    I-84 thru CT

    Where are you going?

I dont know about a specific project, others might but in my experience Mapquest is horrible and has often sent me off in directions that have nothing to do with where I am going . Have you tried google maps too?

    I-84 thru CT

Headed to Boston from N. Pa.

Hmm, I just did a request for directions on google maps and map quest and they both told me to do the same thing. if you see it on the google maps you can see that if you follow the path they set out it makes what looks like a straighter line but to me, that seems so convoluted, I dont see any real reason to do it.

I looked on the DOT web site for construction notificiations too and didnt see any for hartford on 84 (apart from the ongoing never ending construction :)).

If I were making the trip, i would continue on 84 to the mass pike. Either way it would probably be about the same amount of time.

I think I will stay on 84. Thanks for your help.

    -jc

The 691 route is shorter by about 10 miles . The down side is the merge from I-91 To I-84 ca be a pain.

Thanks for the explanation, i was really confused why that would be a %26#39;preferable%26#39; route according to mapquest.

    transportation from airport

Does anybody know of a shuttle or limo service from the Hartford airport to the Canaan, CT/Southfield, MA area? My mother lives there and the car rental rates are really high and I really don%26#39;t need a car while I%26#39;m there, anyway.

    transportation from airport

Try Connecticut Limo or Red Dot Shuttle to see if they might have the service you are looking for.

    Train to NYC

My wife and I are driving down from Cape Cod to NYC. We%26#39;re thinking about stopping in Stamford for the night the shorten the driving and for a cheaper night%26#39;s stay. So we%26#39;d dump the rental car at say 4pm and get the train the next day.

Is this a good plan: can we have a pleasant evening here without a car. We%26#39;ll probably stay at the Marriott/Sheraton.

Train takes 45-55 minutes right? Do we need to pre-book or just turn up (it%26#39;ll be around a 9am train on a Friday)? Is it easy to take with luggage (2 suitcases)?

    Many thanks!

    Train to NYC

You can have a pleasant stay in stamford without a car if you stay at the marriot (not sure of the exact location of the sheraton) because it is downtown. THere are nice restaurants and pubs downtown stamford that will suit you for a night. There is also a shopping mall across the street from the marriot. It is not exactly a ';destination'; but it is a pleasant enough place for a lay over.

The train to NYC does not require reservations. In fact you can just walk on the train and buy a ticket if you want to - although that is not recommended since the price is higher if you buy on board. The price is also higher if you travel during rush hour but by higher I mean approximately 3 - 5 dollars.

You can buy the tickets from the machines inside the train station or from an agent there. Depending on what train you get (local or express - no price difference, just time difference) the train time will be between 45-55 minutes, you are right there. To see the schedules put in stamford and grand central terminal as your departure and destination on this web site. as0.mta.info/mnr/schedules/sched_form.cfm

It is easier to take luggage on board if you are not travelling during rush hour but even if you do get on a crowded train, there are luggage rack above the seats that are usually not full.

    Train to NYC

Thanks for your help - sounds like that will work out very well for us.

    merritt station

    Hi,

I will be staying at the Homestead Studios Norwalk (on main avenue). On the map it looks to be pretty close to the metro north station merritt. Can you actually walk from the hotel to the station?

    merritt station

The Merritt 7 train station serveres mostly a privite office park . Its a hard station to walk into, but you can do it. The downtown station is easer to deal with.

    merritt station

The station is very close to where you are staying but they don%26#39;t run a lot of trains to or from that location.

    as0.mta.info/mnr/schedules/sched_form.cfm

If you have a car, you would be better off driving to the South Norwalk station, parking in the garage ($8 per day) and going from there.

  • Visiting CT in July - Tips?

    Hello!

We%26#39;re are coming to visit CT July 21-25, and we were wondering if you have any tips on what to do? We%26#39;ll be staying in New Haven, and we%26#39;re interested in going to a beach, boating, and to see different towns (possible relocation). We would appreciate any ideas you may have. Thank you!

Visiting CT in July - Tips?

First off, why are you staying in New Haven? I%26#39;d advise you to relocate. If you must stay in NH, hire an armed guard. I%26#39;m not kidding. I am a CT native who grew up in and around NH and know first hand what it%26#39;s like. I have friends who are cops in NH and surrounding towns and even THEY move out of town. Plus, depending on where you%26#39;d like to go, highway traffic is horrendous so you could spend much of your time here stuck in your car.

CT has very little publicly accessible beachfront - everything is privately owned. The only place around for a public beach is in West Haven (borders NH to the west). They have a boardwalk (not like Atlantic City%26#39;s Boardwalk with a capital B - but rather just a walkway along the water) and a few miles of beachfront. WH%26#39;s beaches are very crowded in the summer and are the only reason to ever go there ( I grew up there and left at the first opportunity). There is Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven - but it%26#39;s New Haven. Don%26#39;t be there after dusk without your armed guard and Hammonasset Beach and State Park in Madison, about 30 minutes east of NH. Hammonasset, though, is very crowded in the summer.

As for relocating, there are some nice towns far enough away from the cities - Branford and east along the shoreline to East Lyme, Colchester, New Milford, New Hartford, just to name a few. Good restaurants, but none of them have any good rib joints, though, so head over to the Montgomery Inn and stock up before you come!

I now live in NIantic, a borough of East Lyme. Very nice town. Right on the shore, 2 mile boardwalk on Niantic Bay (again, just a walkway and not a ';Boardwalk';), a town park overlooking the water, and a little downtown that I can only describe as like being on Cape Cod, only without the tourists (thank God!). Good schools, an active, involved community. There are many street festivals through the year (including the weekend before you arrive) and we%26#39;re only an hour from Providence, Hartford, or New Haven. http://www.eltownhall.com.

Speaking of Providence, I%26#39;d fly into there (PVD) instead of Hartford (BDL) if you plan on spending most of your time in the eastern part of the state. I think Delta flies direct from CVG to PVD.

New London (15 minutes east of Niantic) holds an annual Sailfest each July (this coming weekend) http://www.sailfest.org/

The casinos are close by - Mohegan about 20 minutes and Foxwoods about 35. Foxwoods is the largest casino in the world, and I think Mohegan is #3. To give you some scope, the Venetian in Las Vegas has 120,000 sq feet of gaming space - Mohegan has 300,000 and Foxwoods has 340,000. Both have excellent entertainment and dining options. You can have a great time at either without even stepping foot in the casinos. Truth be told, I prefer Mohegan. Before they built their hotel they knew they needed a draw to get people to go there vs the then much larger Foxwoods (which had a hotel) so they threw their money into their dining and entertainment, and it paid off. They even have on-site, secured, supervised child care so Mom and Dad can go and see a show in peace and have a civilized dinner.

    http://www.mohegansun.com/

    http://www.foxwoods.com/

Mystic Seaport is about 30 minutes away. http://www.mysticseaport.org/

Here are the major newspapers for some more ideas:

    New Haven Register - http://www.nhregister.com

    Hartford Courant - http://www.ctnow.com

    New London Day - http://www.theday.com

Connecticut Post (Bridgeport area) - http://www.connpost.com

If you give me some more idea of what you%26#39;re looking to see, do, spend (CT isn%26#39;t cheap) I can offer some more and better suited suggestions.

Visiting CT in July - Tips?

Despite the previous post, New Haven is not that terrible. Although some might prefer a suburban setting New Haven has some great restaurants, musuems, Yale ,some very nice neighborhoods and on Wooster Street the best pizza in the world . One visit I%26#39;d suggest is to Stony Creek, about a 20 minute ride from New Haven on 1-95 east. Get off at exit 56 turn right towards the shore. The are excursion boats that take you on 50 minute tours of the Thimble Islands.

    Brookerme,

Is New Haven that terrible? Compared to CT%26#39;s other larger cities, no. Compared to the rest of this state, yes. There are some wonderful small neighborhoods with character but, on the whole, I cannot recommend New Haven to anyone, especially if they%26#39;re considering a move to CT. Even the charming neighborhoods around the Yale campus are no longer safe at night and some, unfortunately, have the same amount of roadside trash, noise, and other quality of life nuisances as do other not so charming NH neighborhoods. The once beautiful and now dilapidated homes along Howard Avenue, or the Edgewood Park area, are a heartbreaking sight. Even the area around the Green and the Three Churches in broad daylight isn%26#39;t what it used to - or could - be. No, Brookerme, New Haven is not that terrible, but it is far from being the best impression I%26#39;d like to leave guests from out of state with.

It%26#39;s interesting, though, how you defend the city ';despite the previous post';, yet you recommend leaving it and heading to Branford%26#39;s Stony Creek for a boat ride in a non-New Haven area. Why not send them instead to New Haven harbor for an excursion, say on the S/V Quinnipiack?

    www.schoonersoundlearning.org/siboat.html

    Stockholmaren,

One other resource you can try is Connecticut Magazine.

http://www.connecticutmag.com. In it you%26#39;ll find rankings for cities and towns, restaurant guides, a calendar of events and many other resources. As are Brookerme%26#39;s, my opinions are just that - my opinions - formed after being born at Grace-New Haven Community Hospital and living and working 36 of my 41 years in and around the city. With the short amount of time you have here I hope you can get out of New Haven (as we%26#39;ve now both suggested) and see as much of this New England state as you can. Just stay off of I-95 at rush hour, else all you%26#39;ll see is the car in front of you! Oh, and if you like to hike, head for Hamden and the Sleeping Giant.

    鈥tate.ct.us/stateparks/鈥leepinggiant.htm

I lived in New Haven (Westville section) from the age of 8 %26#39;til about 23. That was about 13 years ago. Leaving New Haven was the best thing. Cannot imagine raising my children there, having them attend the public schools, etc.

We actually still have ties to the area (Westville), but only for a lil while longer. We%26#39;re going to be selling my grandfather%26#39;s house, he passed away in May. Once the house is sold, there will be no reason for us to go back to New Haven. Good riddance.

I recommend Rhode Island beaches over any in Connecticutt, with Narragansett Beach being the best overall. CT beaches all face Long Island Sound and, as such, are not as clean, and most of the time, have limitted wave action. Narra. Beach (~$5 to park and ~$4 to get on beach pp) is long and flat with surfing at it%26#39;s southern most end, boogie boarding in the middle and a long expanse of much more deserted beach as you walk north up to the Narrow River which is very warm and full of fish. Something for everyone. RI%26#39;s south coast beaches which are all very nice with open ocean currents tend to have a rather sudden dip that makes the waves crash down on your head with more force. Narra. Beach is approx. 2 hours east of New Haven on Rt. 95. Next best would be Scarborough State Beach (south of SE-facing Narragansett Beach) which has most of those aforementioned qualities, but slightly colder due to its facing the ocean more directly.

The Indian casinos (Foxwoods - Exit 92 I think off Rt 95 - is the largest IN THE WORLD, Moheghan Sun is more to our liking) are east of New Haven but don%26#39;t go from noon friday through Sunday night as it is just too crowded. Mystic, CT has an interesting seaport and a great aquarium. Newport, RI has mind boggling mansions, see the Breakers if you only have time for one (~3 hours east of New Haven: Rt 95 east to Rt. 138 east over Jamestown and Newport Bridges.).

Thank you for all your responses!

First, the reason we鈥檙e staying in NH is because we have a friend who recently moved to the Westville neighborhood, so we can stay at her place. Otherwise we probably wouldn鈥檛 stay in NH, but we hope to get around in the state and see as much as possible of it.

As far as beaches, would you recommend that you go to something like Hammonasset or Scarborough State Beach on a Monday or Tuesday in order to avoid the crowds? It sounds like the same goes for the casinos. Anything you would recommend that you can do during the weekend that鈥檚 not too crowded?

Thanks for the tips about towns. It helps a lot to hear from a local what鈥檚 good and what鈥檚 not. But no good ribs place huh? There has to be one somewhere, isn鈥檛 there?

One more question, do you have any thoughts about the universities in CT? I know some about Yale and UConn, but that鈥檚 about it. I鈥檓 thinking of going back for grad school (MBA, financial mathematics, or IT), so I would like to hear your thoughts on those as well. Thanks again for your informative responses!

New Haven isn%26#39;t much different than any other city I have lived in in terms of safety. There are bad areas, noise etc. just like anywhere. I lived there two years and liked it (and never was attacked), but I like small cities and didn%26#39;t have kids in school.

Since you will be in that area check out if there will be a free concert on the New Haven green while you are there. Also, try the pizza. Not everyone likes it, but personally I think the thin, charred crust pizzas are fantastic.

If you can get into Yale for the MBA, do. It%26#39;s a fantastic program and the people are nicer than you might think. Otherwise, there are lots of schools in Connecticut and the state system offers grad program around the state at places like Central/Western/Southern/Eastern Connecticut State Universities.

Trivia: someone recently picked Storrs as the safest place in America in terms of natural disasters.

Rhode Island does have great beaches but I think you%26#39;d spend far too much time getting there and back, since you%26#39;ve only a few days here. Stick with Hammonassett Beach and go during the week. Weekends there, and anywhere, will be crowded. The casinos are always crowded, more so if a big name act is playing or, in the case of Mohegan, if the Connecticut Sun have a home game.

You have unlimited options for the weekends, indoors or out. That%26#39;s the great thing about CT. Live music, theater, restaurants, museums, galleries, county fairs, historical locations, sporting events, wine tasting and winery tours, hiking the Appalachian Trail, biking trails, kayaking, river rafting and tubing, sailplane and hot air balloon rides, dinner cruises by train or boat. Pretty much anything you%26#39;d want. And you can get to all of them within 60 to 90 minutes.

Some of the lesser known (outside of CT anyway) attractions are:

Lake Compounce, the oldest continously operating amusement park in America, which is in Bristol (about an hour from NH). You can%26#39;t miss it - just look for the massive ESPN campus and turn left.

    http://www.lakecompounce.com/

Beardsley Park Zoo in Bridgeport - http://www.beardsleyzoo.org/

Mystic Marine Life Aquarium - http://www.mysticaquarium.org/

Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History - http://www.yale.edu/peabody/

The Mark Twain House %26amp; Museum -

    http://www.marktwainhouse.org/

As for schools, there are many. Yale, UCONN (with satellite campuses throughout the state) the state University system, Wesleyan, Fairfield University, Connecticut College, the University of New Haven, the University of Hartford, Trinity College, just to name a few.

Good news: Uncle Willie%26#39;s, one of CT%26#39;s best BBQ places recently moved to q new location in Westville. Check it out www.newhavenindependent.org/archives/food/

If you get up to Hartford you can compare it to Black Eyed Sallies downtown or The Cookhouse- right off the highway in East Hartford.

    Enjoy.

As for grad school, there are many, many fabulous choices in New England so you need to narrow your search down to type and location, city vs. rural, private vs. state-supported. Boston is loaded with great ones in the city, Boston College and Harvard, of course. Outside of Boston are great smaller business schools, Babson and Bentley. The larger state schools are all accredited, a consideration in this highly competitive bisiness environment. URI and UCONN are both located in the country - beautiful settings. URI is better located with respect to accessibility to other things. Conn. also has Yale (in New Haven), Conn. College, etc. I am biased toward URI though, we went there and my daughter got a full scholarship to pharmacy school there.URI is unique in that it is a reasonable cost, being a state school, yet has the most cosmopolitan population of any state school in the country at 40% out of state, which gives it more of a private school feel. The new College of Business building is state of the art. Don%26#39;t even consider any MBA program that doesn%26#39;t incorporate international business issues into its program. Every discipline needs it, engineering, journalism, etc. not just business.

    Good luck.

    Looking for fun kid activities

In early August we%26#39;re driving from Booth Bay, Maine to Washington DC. We%26#39;d like to take a few days to do it and make some stops at places that offer outdoor activities for kids (ages 6 and 9). No major cities and not too far off the Maine - DC route. We%26#39;re open to many different suggestions from staying at a working farm or B %26amp; B to staying at a resort. Activities from alpine or water slides, horseback riding, outdoor ropes courses, etc, etc. We%26#39;d love your suggestions!

    Looking for fun kid activities

    Try Lake Compounce www.lakecompounce.com.

Big amusement park, water park, etc. It is right off of I-84 in Bristol, CT. There are definately hotels within short driving distance from there.

Mystic, CT is a very nice historic seaport town. Plenty of shopping, restaurants, aquarium, etc. Just put in Mystic in search field on this site and you%26#39;ll find plenty of info.

    spa place

Can anyone recommend a good spa or 2 in CT?

    spa place

I%26#39;ve heard good things about The Spa at Norwich Inn.

    http://www.thespaatnorwichinn.com/spa.aspx

    spa place

I was at the spa at Norwich Inn. Very nice but it was pretty busy the day I was there, a Friday, which decreases the relaxation when you have trouble finding a place to sit between treatments. The treatments add up fast so consider a package deal.

There%26#39;s the Mayflower Inn %26amp; Spa in Washington CT. I%26#39;ve never been there, or to any spa, so I can%26#39;t compare or recommend, but I hear it%26#39;s pretty pricey.

Where in CT? That%26#39;s going to make a difference.

My absolutely favorite spa anywhere is Elizabeth Arden Red Door.

Saybrook Point Inn %26amp; Spa in Old Saybrook

Water%26#39;s Edge Resort %26amp; Spa in Westbrook

    Parisian Day Spa in Cromwell

Thanks everyone. Was trying to figure out a day out with some girlfriends. I%26#39;ll check into some of these places.

I am going to west haven connecticut with my cousin as she wonts to visit a friend (we live in london england) we are going in october and i would like to know what there is to do and whats the weather like.

this is my first time going to america so any advice would be great on hotels near campbell avenue west haven or anything on the area.

all advice welcome bad or good thanks

    please help

    Hi,

I can%26#39;t say that West Haven CT will offer you a great first experience in America... however, being that you are going there to visit a friend, here are a few suggestions:

West Haven itself doesn%26#39;t offer great places to stay. Consider staying in New Haven - which is a short ride from West Haven. There is a nice hotel in downtown New Haven called the Omni. Another option could be to stay in Milford - which is a nice town along the shoreline in CT. There are a few reasonably priced hotels in the Milford area.

Be sure to plan a night out in New Haven. It offers a great selection of restaurants and bars. Yale University is also located in New Haven - so if that interests you, be sure to plan a tour of the campus. New Haven also offers great pizza! Try Sally%26#39;s, Pepes or Modern for a real treat.

As for the weather, October wil be beautiful. It is the perfect time to visit New England. It will be on the cool side - crisp fall air. Depending on when you will visit in October, you may also be able to see the foliage change - one of the best reasons to visit New England! It can be spectacular. You won%26#39;t necessarily see that in West Haven - but you could take a drive to parts of CT to see the foliage.

If you have the time, you could hop on a MetroNorth train from the train station in New Haven and be in New York City (Grand Central Station) in about an hour and a half. Well worth the trip!!

Enjoy your first visit to America!!

    HELP~ Visiting Family 4-1st time!!!!!

My DH, DD (3) and I are visiting my DH%26#39;s family for the first time. We married on 10/13/01 and DH%26#39;s entire family (everyone lives in CT) decided that they did not want to travel to CA at that time) did not attend. I would like to know what would be a great housewarming gift we could offer. We will be staying at my DH%26#39;s aunt%26#39;s house in New Haven. We live in CA and I have never met his side of his family and would like to bring a ';nice'; gift to thank them for letting us stay at their house for a week.

    Thanks for your help!

    HELP~ Visiting Family 4-1st time!!!!!

When I%26#39;m staying at someone else%26#39;s house in another part of the country, I like to bring my host(ess) a package of goodies that have something to do with where I live. What%26#39;s special from where you live? Maybe some handcrafted mugs and teas or coffees? Wine (if you%26#39;re certain they imbibe)? Cheeses?

When I visited a friend in Texas for the first time, I was at my local purveyor of fine spirits and asked if he had any good Connecticut wines (we have some small wineries in the state). He rolled his eyes and said there was no such thing as a really good Connecticut wine, and asked why I wanted one. When I explained about the hostess gift, he showed me a limoncello (Italian type of lemon liqueur) in a beautiful bottle that was made in Connecticut, and that%26#39;s what I took.

When I visited my brother %26amp; his wife in Reno for the first time (hadn%26#39;t seen him in about 5 years, and her for even longer), I took a pair of mugs that I%26#39;d found on my adventure in Hungary earlier in the year. This year when I go back, I%26#39;m taking them coffee from my trip to Costa Rica earlier this month.

If your DD%26#39;s are old enough, have them make a special thank you card to include; they%26#39;ll probably feel important making a contribution to the gift.

West Haven doesn%26#39;t have too much that I know of, (though Swagat%26#39;s Indian restaurant is a real gem for authentic South Indian food).

There is an Econolodge off of the interstate that is clean and one of the cheapest places around. It isn%26#39;t anything special, so if you have more money and want something fancier, you can easily hop on the highway and have dozens of options.

There are good restaurants, some interesting shops and several museums in New Haven. I also recommend the free Yale tour, even though it is geared a bit towards prospective students.

You should plan to travel into New York City, which is about two hours by car or train (in case you need to go on your own).

You can also go hiking in the northwestern part of CT, visit Mystic Seaport, visit Boston, Salem, or Cape Cod in Mass or Newport in RI. Lots to do, especially if you have a car and time for some overnight trips. But the train will get you many places, too.

October is likely to be the time when leaves are turning and the weather is usually neither hot nor cold.

  • Safety in Hartford

    Greetings,

I%26#39;m thinking about taking a day trip to Harftford this summer (from Boston) and I wanted to check out the area around the Mark Twain House, but then I read this article on yahoo about crime in the area:

    …yahoo.com/s/…violent_cities_1

Is this area safe getting from/ to and parking my car? You know how the news tends to exaggerate, but I don%26#39;t want hang out in a crime zone either!

    Safety in Hartford

Hi Kiki...YES they tend to exaggerate! I have lived in Hartford all my life and I FEEL safe. Funny that you have mentioned about the crimes. In USA Today they have Arkansas, AR as being worst when it comes to crimes! Anyway...to answer your TOP question...The crimes are being taken care of as we speak (the State Troppers are on patrols) and Mark Twain House is located on the West End of Hartford (the crimes are in the North End). The West End in Hartford is the SAFEST part in Hartford! The Mark Twain House has parking right on it%26#39;s property so you won%26#39;t have to go far, and right next to The Mark Twain House there is the Harriett Beecher House (I may suggest you check it out) and if you would like some nice coffee or drinks (go to Tisane%26#39;s coffee house) which is right on Farmington Avenue (where Mark Twains house) is located. And...like ANY major cities in the US...there are crimes EVERYWHERE! Unfortunately...the BAD news are the ONLY ones that they show on TV. GOOD LUCK and WELCOME to Hartford! Also..go to www.hartford.com for more info of FUN things to do while visiting!!!!.

    Safety in Hartford

    Danct,

Thanks for the excellent advice! I did want to visit the Harriet Beecher Stowe House (and Elizabeth Park too), and now I have a cool place to grab a beverage. I will check it out!

Hi Kiki...You will LOVE Elizabeth Park! I would suggest asking the person on the souvenier shop for directions to get to the park. It is like a 4 minutes drive from Mark Twain House. It is SO easy to get to..is is located on Prospect Avenue and Farmington Avenue (where the Mark Twain House) is connected to Prospect, Ave so it is right in your direction. Welcome!

Kiki..just posted: HARTFORD, Conn. -- State troopers could be walking the beat in Hartford as early as Friday as part of a newly-launched operation.

The operation has been named True North.

It is hoped that it will help curb violence in the capital city, and it is already having an impact.

Thursday, police seized five illegal firearms in a raid on a Capen Street house. The number of guns pulled off the street in the past two days stands at 12.

I just heard that Hartford%26#39;s murder rate were top 5 in the nation that has increased 50% !!!

    ----------------------------------------

In Hartford, Conn. for example, murders jumped more than 50 percent, from 16 to 25.

    abclocal.go.com/kgo/story…

    ----------------------------------------

In Connecticut, violent crime rose in Bridgeport and fell slightly in Waterbury and Hartford, the statistics show.

But the murder rate leapt dramatically in all three cities, including a jump from 16 to 25 in Hartford, records show.

    stamfordadvocate.com/news/…

    tripadvisor.com/GoListDetail-i2872-Mid_point…

YES...BUT again..if YOU are familiar with Hartford...ALL the crimes are on the North End and Kiki wants to go to The Mark Twain House which is on the West End...and they are talking numbers....like other major states the crimes are high! Look at Dorchester, Mass...where there are a lot of shootings...it is NOT only happening in Hartford!

Young Lady the media%26#39;s not exagerating about this one,in these times that we are living in are evil and we are not safe anywhere. But in saying that i will suggest a day trip with a friend and that would go for anyone, being a Mother thats my advice to you.V.R.

Thanks for the info. In fact, I have been wanted to take my family to visit Mark Twain Museum as well, but not yet been. I am also thinking to go either this weekend or soon in the future.

I am not afraid of high murder rate because people at Hartford did not shoot visitors if you call police department and check into all the murder cases.

However, I did know some cases where visitors got into fight and injured by panhandlers in San Francisco and other major cities where there are big homeless population. Even so, the reason of fight was that visitor refuse to spare some change, yet said something bad to the panhandlers such as ';lazy bum'; ...etc.

I have learned a tip for over dozen years is to always have $20 bill handy (not in my wallet) but a seperated envelope. When I ran into homeless or panhandlers in New York City, I just gave them the money. I also got stopped once at Cleveland OH, and after giving the guy $20 bill, he ran away right away ...

I heard there are 8 millions of homeless people in this country and dozens millions jobless or low income, and when they are under eviction not able to pay rent or no money to pay utility then came out to panhandle, and tourists are often deemed wealthy have spare cash to travel. I have found it much safer to have spare $20 bills to ';help'; when I ran into them.

    tripadvisor.com/GoListDetail-i2872-Mid_point…

I just read the article that Kiki posted carefully... …yahoo.com/s/…violent_cities_1

I have found the shooting came from young people 12 to 16 year old in residential area; they are not shooting visitors...

I would not move to Hartford, but I think visiting Hartford is fine, I guess, especially, famous spots where there are many visitors.

    tripadvisor.com/GoListDetail-i2872-Mid_point…

Hartford is a great city. The city%26#39;s violent crime is compressed into the city%26#39;s North End and is dealing mainly with teenagers who are using guns to solve disputes. Disputes between teenagers happen every day but noone hears about because they are not using guns to solve these disputes.

Downtown Hartford and the West End where the Mark Twain House is located is a very safe neighborhood. As in any major city or basically anywhere take the normal precautions (dont leave valuables in car, lock car doors, etc...) and you should be just fine.

Dont let the increase in crime deter you from visiting of this country%26#39;s great cities!!

Open Letter to Bun Lai and Miya's Sushi

    Dear Bun,

I would like to thank you for the magical evening. We have had so many together, but paradoxically, each seems to be unique and special. Upon reflection, this is the magic of a night at MIYA%26#39;S with Bun presiding as sorcerer.

Goethe once wrote that ';one ought, everyday at least, to hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture, and, if it were possible, to speak a few resonable words.'; Though I feel some trepidation in amending such fine words from such a supremely perceptive man, I dare say that Goethe, if he ever dinned at Miya%26#39;s, would have included ';to eat a lovely meal, and pass time with a beautiful soul,'; to his requisites for a good day. Not many bring such goodness into the world for others to experience and take into theri lives. it is the combination of a rare gift and creative energy. You should know this.

    Yancy

Open Letter to Bun Lai and Miya's Sushi

Bun Lai is creative to the extreme and never stops thinking about food or what he is going to create next, or ingredients people would never think would go together. Though his menu may be in the clouds where his mind comfortably resides, his restaurant is determinedly down to earth.

The cozy decor; the waitresses who know your name and favorite dish after you have eaten there twice; and the general sense of brio, elan, eclat, panache - pick your favorite unusual word to describe this most unusual sushi joint, a restaurant with the spirit of a bar and the comfiness of a diner - the incomparable Miya%26#39;s Sushi.

    New Haven Neighborhoods/Good Schools/Inexpensive

This message is much like the ';Good Small Town'; post, but without the horses. We%26#39;re moving to New Haven but do not have a big budget ($200K) to buy a house.

We heard Westville is a good place, but also could find good homes closer to the University.

    Any suggestions?

    New Haven Neighborhoods/Good Schools/Inexpensive

Westville is a good choice. You should be able to find at lest a small yard there. You might also consider the Whitney Ave. area north of Yale. 200K will be tough. If you don%26#39;t have kids I might consider some of the rehabs near State St. Buying in West Haven might buy a little more.

    New Haven Neighborhoods/Good Schools/Inexpensive

New Haven is a wondrful city that sometimes gets a bad rap. If you will work at Yale there is a housing office to help you. Consider a sublet or a sabbatical house while you%26#39;re looking. $200,000 will get you a modest home in Woodbridge, 15 minutes form Yale and with the best schools in the area. New Haven taxes are high so combined with mortgage payments makes NH expensive. They are high because the city is flush with colleges, museums and hospitals, all not paying taxes. So the homeowner carries the full burden. Check on-line listings so you%26#39;ll get an idea what%26#39;s out there. Wouldn%26#39;t recommend the shoreline direction tho lovely because the Q Bridge is being renovated for the next 10 years and commutes are a nightmare. You are coming to an exciting part of the country. If you%26#39;re from the South you%26#39;ll find that we have businesslike winters so lay in a good supply of snuggies. Starts to get brisk around the third week in Sept. Good luck.

Also look in Hamden - I lived in Westville for a few years and loved it there - West Haven is nice because you are near to the beach. If you are handy, you can pick up a HUD home in the New Haven area very inexpensively and rehab it.

I lived in the Westville section of New Haven for about 15+ years. Left New Haven when I got married and started a family. Don%26#39;t miss that area at all. Think it%26#39;s really gone downhill......

If you have school-aged children you plan on sending to public school, I do not believe New Haven is where you want to live. The public schools just don%26#39; t cut it. Nearby towns with better pblic schools are Woodbridge, Bethany, East Haven, North Haven, Branford, Hamden and Wallingford.

If you plan on sending the children to private schools, New Haven is great. Westville, Morris Cove and the Yale area are all very nice. I really love the Cottage Street area.

    Hartford CT Safety

Last Tuesday my husband and I visited the Mark Twain House and it was very interesting. Once there, we did not feel threatened in any way. The grounds and house are beautiful. However, Hartford might be considered to some folks to be a safe place to visit, but it was scary to be driving that day when a police car was chasing another car while we were on our way to the Mark Twain House.

    Hartford CT Safety

Welcome to the real world! As stated by you and I quote ';Once there, we did not feel threatened in any way. The grounds and house are beautiful';. So that is the IMPORTANT part. As for a patrol car chasing another...it happens EVERYWHERE. Hartford has it safe parts and not. Again...read the Boston Globe or NY times and you will read about crime everywhere NOT just in Hartford.

    Hartford CT Safety

Hey, I%26#39;d be more concerned if the cops weren%26#39;t doing their job (NOT chasing the car/suspect) ;-)

    Naomi

Thank you VERY much Naomi! GREAT point!

I agree with you. The real world today is scary. Not just Hartford, but any place. If I ever go back, I will research my route more carefully and try to avoid the inner city.

  • Mystic Aquarium Institue for Exploration

I see they have a swim with a Beluga whale program as well as a meet the penguins program. I was wondering if anyone had done either of these and what they thought of them as well as the aquarium. We will be stopping in Mystic for just the aquarium on our way to Canada. I have a 10 %26amp; 12yr old.

Also are there any nice campgrounds within a 20min or so drive?

    Thanks

    Mystic Aquarium Institue for Exploration

    hi

me and my family went to mystic aquarium two years ago we found it to be a great place quite large and plenty to look at we are planning a return visit this yaer the beluga whales are beautiful but we never did the meeting program ,well worth a visit

    regards tony

    Mystic Aquarium Institue for Exploration

We skipped the penguin program but I did do the Beluga whale contact program-I loved it!! It was pretty amazing to be able to touch something that large. The staff was great %26amp; the whales were very calm %26amp; well trained. A lot of money but I would do it over again. The aquarium also had a nice Titanic exhibit that the family enjoyed. The Coral Reef exhibit was also very beautiful.

Nobody liked the XC motion ride theater though. It was a little rough %26amp; boring.

I agree with the last post, we (our sons are 8 1/2 %26amp; 12) visited Mystic Aquarium a few months ago and were very disappointed with the XD Motion Theater. Very short. It%26#39;s over before you know it, I think you spend more time waiting to get in. Nothing special :-(

What's it like living in Hartford?

I am a native New Yorker, now living in Ohio for the past 10 years, and I%26#39;m considering a move back to the East Coast (I miss the water and my family). Due to the seemingly stable economy, I would consider a move to Hartford but I%26#39;ve only really been there once for a day visit.

What is it like living in Hartford (or CT for that matter)? Is it boring? Does living in the shadows of Boston and NYC get annoying? Do people drive down to the beachs of the LI Sound (like New Yorkers drive to Jones Beach)? Is the economy stable/decent job growth?

As you can see, I have hesitation because I want to make sure I make a good move. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Lotta people here (including us) drive to Cape Cod for vacation. About a 3 -4 hr trip depending on where on the Cape you go. So worth it, love it there! :-)

People also go to Misquamicut (Rhode Island) for getaways. Supposed to be nice, we%26#39;ve never been (hooked on the Cape).

Have fun doing your research. And, good luck if you do end up relocating here.

    Naomi :-)

What's it like living in Hartford?

Regarding the stability of the economy and job growth, I think it all depends on what industry you%26#39;re in and what job skills you have. We%26#39;ve seen a lot of jobs leave Connecticut in the past few years, and have fought hard to keep others from leaving. At the company where I work, a lot of people have lost their jobs to outsourcing.

As to ';boring';, it depends on what you want in your life. I don%26#39;t mind ';living in the shadows of Boston and NYC'; as I don%26#39;t like NYC and it%26#39;s less than 2 hours to get to Boston when I want to go there. What kinds of things are you looking for to keep your life from being boring? Sports? We no longer have an NHL team - but we do have a minor league team, and they%26#39;re fun. We don%26#39;t have an MLB team, either, but we do have a few minor league teams, and one is close to Hartford. There%26#39;s a WBNA team an hour away, down at one of the two casinos in Connecticut. ';Culture';? Hartford and New Haven both have music and theatre to offer; the Goodspeed Opera House, which is about an hour from Hartford, has been the birthplace of a number of plays and musicals which became famous on Broadway. Museums -- one major one in Hartford, and I believe Yale down in New Haven has some goodies as well.

Might be a good idea to take an extended vacation here if you can, to get a better feel as to whether it would be a good fit for you.

Living in CT is like living anywhere else. It%26#39;s mind over matter and what one makes of it. I have lived here all my life (born in Puerto Rico) and lived in New York for one year and it is a great place to live (for me personally). YES it DOES get annoying living in the shadows of NY or Boston but THAT is the best part of it....you are ONLY two hrs away from these two cities. We do have beaches in CT and it is very easy to get to Long Island Sound. We have Mystic Seaport, Greenwich, New Haven etc...Hartford is going through a MAJOR face lift with new jobs coming in and new apartments being built. We have GREAT NIGHT lifes. We have The Mark Twain House, Harriett Beecher, The Bushnell, The Wadsworth etc...check out www.hartfordct.com and you can get a better idea.

I wouldn%26#39;t say we live in the shadows on Boston or NYC. Boston is Boston, NYC is NYC and Hartford is Hartford. Three different cities and three different states.

I%26#39;m 36 years old and have lived in CT my entire life. Think I%26#39;ve been to NYC once (as a teenager). Really have no interest in going there.

Never been to Boston, would like to visit there one day (no rush though) ;-)

    Very happy here in CT.....

    Naomi :-)

To the previous person, you are from Newington and have never been to Boston and been to New York once? I truly find that fascinating. Utterly and completely so.

As for the poster%26#39;s question, do you want to live in Hartford or the suburbs, big difference between the 2. I grew up in the suburbs and lived in the city of Hartford after college. The city is a mess, services stink, crime can be bad, your car insurance will double, but the suburbs can be deadly boring. If you are single, you may want to live in the city. As you probably know, insurance dominates in Hartford. Is what industry do you want to work?

    Fascinating, why thank you.....

Nothing%26#39;s stopping from visiting either. I have NO desire whatsoever to go into NY. None. Not into shopping, fine dining, museums....

Like I mentioned, I%26#39;d like to visit Boston eventually. Perhaps a long weekend with our kids at some point. But, to be honest, there%26#39;s a lotta other places, ahead of Boston, on my list of places to visit. ;-)

Very content right here thank you very much.

    Naomi

People..a FRIENDLY reminder. THIS forum is for friendly and FUN advice. DO NOT get overwhelmed by it as I personally had to report certain issues on the last forum. People tend to get TOO excited and start getting off the main subject. As for ';certain'; people who does not live in THIS state.....STOP criticizing Hartford and come and check it out! We are going through a major renovation and three main points..NO matter what major city you live in...the cost of living, insurance and crime will sometimes be high! NOT just in Hartford!

I lived in and around Hartford all my life. I am more than qualified to speak about Hartford. So please get off your high horse and do NOT tell me about what topics I can and cannot post.

Do you even live in the city, or are you safe in the suburbs telling people how great Hartford is because you go in to watch UConn basketball?

One last thing, I did answer the person%26#39;s question about moving to Hartford and if you read my response I even said that as a single person living in the city can be the best option as the suburbs are boring (grew up in the suburbs, lived in the West End after college until I moved to New York). He should be aware of the issues of living in Hartford, however.

I was just fascinated that someone could live in CT all their life and never have gone to Boston. All I said is that it was fascinating, still is to me.

YES...YES...%26amp; YES! I WORK %26amp; LIVE in Hartford (NOT a suburb) so therefore I am also qualified to answer. In all my years living here I have never feared walking around Hartford. I NOT only work in Downtown Hartford, but on the weekend I come here for entertaintment. It seems that ';certain'; individuals left Hartford with a bitter taste so therefore move ON!
