Hi!
I%26#39;ll move shortly from Europe to New Haven; do you have any advice about the best areas where to rent an appartment? I%26#39;ll be working around Meriden, but I think New Haven would be a nicer place to enjoy night life. Is commuting OK to Meriden?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Housing in New Haven
In New Haven, I would look at Westville or the area near Pepes pizza - I would look in Hamden or North Haven as well - they would be in between Meriden and New Haven, which would give you the nightlife, but a little quieter of an area to live.
Another option would be to go North of Meriden, towards Middletown - that would put you close to Hartford for nightlife.
Housing in New Haven
Try the area near East Rock Park in the Whitney Ave. area of New Haven. You%26#39;ll be doing a reverse commute forom most others and it should be an easy drive. Its a good neighborhood and close to the highway for your commute.
I love New Haven and it does have lots of interesting things going on at night--jazz and rock clubs, many restaurants, art glalleries, symphonies, movies, theater, etc.
But Middletown is also a great place to live and because of Weslyan University also has a lively entertainment scene just not as much as New haven.
All the places cited are good suggestions. I know Westville the best and really like it. Joe Lieberman just sold his house in Westville. It%26#39;s mostly private homes. New artists%26#39; housing is just at the end of construction but no sign out yet.
I wouldn%26#39;t try to live to close to downtown New Haven, as you pay a premium for being near the university, and if you don%26#39;t have off-street parking you have to contend with street cleaning and snow emergency parking rules.
The East Rock area is probably the best part of New Haven for your needs, but personally, I would go a little further out and choose the southern part of Hamden. It is nice and quiet, affordable, but not a long trip at all into New Haven.
New Haven is a small city, but does have a lot to offer. I certainly enjoyed living there.
Thank you all for your kind pieces of advice! I look forward to moving there.
