Hotels/Motels near Yale

We are about to begin our college search for our daughter and plan on visiting Yale. Can you please recommend some hotels or motels pretty close to the campus? Thank You

Probably your best and closest bets would be the Omni Hotel at Yale or the Courtyard Marriott - they are both walking distance to the Campus.

There%26#39;s the Residence Inn, they mention on their site that the have a shuttle service (6 mile range, Yale is %26lt; 6 miles away) M-F.

Hope this helps.

I agee. Hotels are not New Haven%26#39;s greatest treasure. That would be th 128 restaurants. Many are around the campus on Church St. My son just graduated from Yale. I know it%26#39;s brutally competititeve now but once you%26#39;re in it%26#39;s not that hard. If you need financial aid choose Princepton. They are much more generous. Across from Starbucks is the great and free British Art Center

I would not recommend the Residence Inn - It might look good on the net, but in reality, it is not in the greatest area.

There are other smaller hotels nearby, but they are not too nice - I think the two I suggested are probably your best option for getting the feel of what it would be like to live at Yale - both are near to the campus, and will allow your daughter to see the types of places she can walk to from the dorms.

The restaurant comment is right on - there are some incredible dining opportunities in New Haven!

You mean New Haven still has a %26#39;good%26#39; area?

Having lived in New Haven for 10 years - yes, there are still lots of nice areas - just like any other city.

Assumptions? New Haven is a dynamic, stimulating beautful city filled with museums and theaters, restaurants and really smart people.

My sterotype of places like Newington is of a boring, lily white suburb.

This illustrates CT%26#39;s lack of understanding or interest in its cities. I try daily to get communities to work together and find it frustrating to jsus them into their cars for training together.

The ';Land of Steady Habits is stuck.';

Lived in New Haven (Westville) for about 25 years, my husband grew up there as well (the %26#39;Cove%26#39;). We%26#39;ve lived in Hamden, Meriden and just recently (6 months ago) moved to Newington.

I realize there%26#39;s good and bad in each and every city/town but you couldn%26#39;t pay ME to move back to New Haven. Not where I%26#39;d wanna raise my family.......

I feel that downtown New Haven and even some of the outlying ';burbs'; have really improved over the last few decades. 20 years ago I wouldn%26#39;t have dreamed of walking in New Haven alone, and now it wouldn%26#39;t occur to me NOT to. I do agree, though, that I wouldn%26#39;t necessarily want to raise a family there, just as I wouldn%26#39;t want to in Manhattan.

I also agree with some about the hotels. Stick to the Omni or the New Haven Hotel (I think...the one in the old Temple Medical building). The Yale areas of downtown are beautiful, and you%26#39;ll feel like you%26#39;re walking around Greenwich Village, with all of the interesting little shops and restaurants. DO NOT consider the Residence Inn because of the price.....you%26#39;d be amazed at the difference in the areas that a short 6 mile distance separates. Stick to downtown, and you%26#39;ll have a wonderful time.

Leslie makes a good suggestion. The New Haven Hotel is not well known. One floor is joined to the medical center and patients, including me, are rolled onto that floor.

The rest of the building is a conventional hotel lovely pool, elegant restarant and across the street from an interesting bistoro Next door is the fabulous retro-Criterion movie theater. Expensive but worth it.

City v. Suburb? Different strokes for different folks. Many, if not most, Yale professors live around the University but some live in the suburbs. Some exciting school successes, some first class private schools. It %26#39;s possible to have a good life in New Haven or other cities. We%26#39;ll see the ultimate impact of gas prices as they steadily increase again.

For hotel and dinner you can%26#39;t beat New Haven. And take an autumn walk around the historic New Haven Green and peak intot the 3 beautfiul churches on the Green. Trinity has Tiffany windows. Fantastic view of the Green from the Omni Hotel Restaunt windows. Great brunch.

Have a good visit and good luck to you college visitor. My son just graduated from Yale. It was interesting experience . He just moved to Las Vegas for his first job and that really is a dreadful city.
