Day trip from NYC

Hi everyone

I%26#39;ll be in NY March 30 - April 17 and I%26#39;m wanting to visit CT, but not sure where to start.

Ideally I%26#39;d like to just make it a day trip because I%26#39;m planning to visit either Boston or Washington for a weekend and don%26#39;t want to spend too much money on extra accomodation as our accomodation in NY is paid for throughout our entire time there.

I would like to visit Yale but other than that, what else are worth visiting? I have also been told that unlike NY, there is not as much public transport in CT so it would be mostly taxis or self driving. I didn%26#39;t particularly want to drive in NY, but is the traffic much less hectic in CT?

Thankyou

Day trip from NYC

Yale is in the eastern part of the state so it will be harder to get to. The capital is Hartford and there are several good museums and historic home, especially the Mark Twain House. There is mostly bus transportation and cabs, but no subway sytem that I know of in CT. Hartford traffic is hectic depending on the time of day, but probably not as bad as mid-town Manhattan.

Boston has a very good underground system known as the ';T';. It extends about an hour out from the city. The weather in Washington in April will likely be nicer than Boston weather in April.

Day trip from NYC

Yale is NOT!!!!! in the eastern part of the state. It is in New Haven which is very easily accessible from New York by train (it%26#39;s the last stop on the New Haven Metro North line, trains leave every hour, more during rush hour). Ride takes about an hour and a half. That person should know what he/she is talking about before giving false information

Public transport, outside of Metro North is pretty bad in Connecticut, so a car is necessary. Traffic can be bad, though not New York City bad, near the cities and I-95 (from New York - New Haven usually is bad)

Thankyou Bobby.

What would you recommend to see and do in CT for the day?

If you are only going to be taking the train, then New Haven is a good choice, There is a lot to do at Yale, the Peabody Museum is good. Here is a link

If you have a car, Hartford has the Wadsworth Atheneum and Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe Houses (they are across from each other). Amtrak goes here, but It is expensive. There are also buses (Greyhound and Peter Pan)

There is also Mystic (aquarium, nautical stuff, whaling) and nearby is Groton and New London (coast Guard Academy, nuclear submarines). These are in southeast Connecticut, there is train service from New Haven, but not that frequent.

There is also Litchfield County, what you think of as New England (pretty town greens, antique shops, etc). Definitely need a car for this area

If you like to gamble, Connecticut has 2 huge casinos. There are buses from New York direct to each.

It is not common, but by no means unheard of to get snow in early April, just something to be aware of. Can also be cold, rainy, or nice. The weather varies a lot, really no way to predict

Here is a link to the Connecticut Tourism Guide, it%26#39;s pretty good outlining what my former home has to offer. For a day trip, you really need to pick one and go with that particular area

Thankyou.

Initially I wanted to just take the train there and use public transport and cabs to get around but someone I know also told me having a car would be more convenient.

So I may look into hiring a car once we get into CT via the train as she%26#39;s assured me the driving conditions are nothing like in Manhattan!

BobbyC,

I%26#39;m planning a fall foliage trip to New England and you mentioned Litchfield County. I looked it up on this website and the only town coming up is New Milford. Would you recommend this one or are there other areas in Litchfield county I should look into? Thanks!

Oh my god, New Milford is NOT a destination - I work near there and even a co-worker who lives there agrees with me. It has a cute town square but that is it.

I%26#39;m sure that there are other places to go, try Kent, CT it is a quaint town that is a country refuge for a lot of people from the city and also an artists community. It is along Route 7, farther north from New Milford.

See this web site and if it is something you might like...

Kent is nice, Cornwall, Sharon, Washington, the town of Litchfield, there are a few other quaint places. New Milford isn%26#39;t one of them, not a bad town but just not what you are probably looking for. Avoid Torrington. Here is a web site

Yes, listen to bobbyc - avoid torrington!

thanks!!! I%26#39;ve decided to stay in Kent, but lodging seems to be very limited there. I%26#39;ll call Fife %26#39;n Drum tomorrow to see if they can still accomodate me.
