Crossing Connecticut west to east

Would like to avoid the worst traffic! Are we better off crossing on I-84, I-95, a combination or take some 2-lane roads? We%26#39;re mainly just interested in scenery, and getting a ';taste of Conn.'; I feel like I have a handle on Vt., NH, and ME, but need ideas for CT, MA and RI. Any help is much appreciated!

I-84 is usually an easier drive than I-95. If its near rush hour avoid Hartford by taking I-691 (taking you right by Ted%26#39;s- steamed cheeseburgers) then 91 north back to I-84 east. You will miss out on New Haven Pizza though unless you take 95.

I didn%26#39;t express myself very well - I should have said ';feel of Conn'; rather than taste. Thanks for the route information.

best route really is rt 15 Merrit and Wilber Cross Parkways (very scenic roads) to I-91 north then rt 9 south to I-95 north or take I-91 to I-84 east. In general you will find that the north/south roads are much more scenic than east/west any place ex. on the shore line

I don%26#39;t think you will really get a feel for the state just by driving on the highways. However, the Merritt certainly is a nicer drive than 95, simply because no trucks and all treelined.

but should say that traffic can be brutal on any of them.

not sure where you want to end up but I%26#39;d say take I-95. Get off at exit 56 and turn right to Stony Creek. About 1.5 Mi., take one of the thimble island tour boats- a 45 tour. Then take Route 146 to Guilford. Ride around the Guilford Green then jump back on I-95. Take 9 North to Essex. Walk up and down Main. St. and visit the CT River Museum. Go back to 95 east and either continue on 95 to RI or 395 to Mass.

Those definitely sound like some good possibilities. Thanks.

brookerme- If I had to pick a place to eat in the area of I-84/I 691 I%26#39;d skip Teds and opt for Blackies hotdogs (hot pepper relish is great) in Cheshire, right off I-84. The burgers at Teds dont impress me all that much. http://www.blackieshotdogs.com/
